Good sneakers for riding?

for the past year or so I've been pretty much doing everything in these http://www.sperrytopsider.com/images...100210_169.jpg loafers. I got new MKS sylvan pedals, and they're hurting my feet. I can feel them through the sole of the shoe. These things have been worn daily for a year doing things loafers were not meant to do. 50 mile bike rides, hiking, circumnavigating cities, running, skateboarding, pretty much everything. I'm thinking about getting some kind of sneaker that actually has some arch support or something. What are people wearing that feels good while riding? Anyone have pumas? How do they hold up? Good for riding? What about on the track? I thought I saw a pair of Eddy Merckx shoes once but I've never been able to find them again, they were nice looking too. Any suggestions/recommendations?

Pretty much any old school* indoor soccer shoe will work just as well.

*whatever that means anymore

When I see another guy on a fixed gear with Sambas, I think to myself "that guy knows what he's doing."

those treads on the blue and white adidas might be tricky to slide out of you sylvans in a pinch.

If you want something a little different, I have been using a pair of ben sherman's that I got off ebay. The soles are thicker than any of my other shoes (though I have never tried the sambas). Bonus, the sherman's come in fun colors.

If you want a cheap shoe go look at Walmart for the 8$ fake slip on vans. Hard sole and tough. Ive been beating the crap out of them for weeks and they are holding up fine. I like em' more than the sambas.

adidas samba or vans authentic/era

Adidas Stan Smiths are low profile and smooth around the toe, come in lots of colors, and have relatively stiff soles. I highly recommend them! (that said, 1) they run a little small, and 2) I'm usually in Converse or Sidis lately)

Skate highs?

Let's talk about bad shoes for riding for a second... not one to generalize and well-aware of the fact that not all skate shoes are created equally, the ones with the super fat padded tongues, especially approaching the toe region, are pretty bad for riding with clips/straps. Also, anything with an overly floppy sole is going to suck away your power transfer. I had a pair of skate shoes that fit the above two characteristics and not only did I feel way less in control of my bike, but my legs started to hurt a lot more after that.

I'm almost tempted to try out some Sidi's/clipless though...

when i actually used clips and straps i wore some asics ultimate 81. they are comfy as hell. but since i got some asics yeti i cant use clips and straps anymore cause the shoe is a little too bulky.

I've tried Onitsuka Tigers, Gola Chases and Adidas Sambas. The Sambas are by far the most comfortable for riding. The asics and the golas aren't bad either, though.

My favorite are the adidas gazelle.
I have sambas too, but i find that the sole on the gazelle is slightly thicker (but not too thick) and provides more comfort on longer rides.

i'd super suggest keds champions
Even though theyre women's sizes just get 1 and a half size up they're literally perfect for clips and straps.
really narrow and thin so you get deep into clips and good strap coverage over the foot as a whole.
plus they have super smooth, flat soles to get out of the clips easily when in sketch situations.

yeah any shoe with too big a toe or really any tread on the bottom is usually a huge problem for me as with the big toe i'm have way less control cuz my foot doesn't feel in all the way and with tread getting out of the clips is a ***** because it hangs onto the pedal.

what is the name of these?

tschoenb 09-15-07 12:41 AM

^ thems is called the athens. They dont seem to make very many these days. I have a dope ass pair of maroon vinyl ones from about a year ago.

I have gola's, but the sole is way too thin; and I use GR-9s.

And Re: 661 shoes. I grew up in the 661, its terrible. I refuse to buy anything from anyone trying to be proud of the 661. Nothing but mormons, fast food, sun, soccer moms, and children. Although I have a friend that says he saw a black person there once... unlikely.
