If you run stop signs when traffic is present, you deserve to get hit. It's usually those kinds of people with blatant disregard for the law(s) and other individuals that do get hit and then ***** about it later (if they're still alive)... Cracks me up!

Why is it that people are stupid enough to believe crap like this?
The notion that all traffic laws should apply to bicycles is ludicrous.

Also, to the person that said "because it's the law." Have a fun life with that mindset.
and I'm going to assume that I have a few years of life on you; My life is fun enough that I don't need it complicated with a bike vs. car accident. Someday you'll grow up a little and maybe your attitude will change. |

That is why i call your reading comprehension into question, which apparently wasn't unjustified, so maybe before you think i should think clearly and not run my mouth, you should do the same, and not assume that i am making blanket statements that i didn't make.
I didn't feel like i needed to write a 3 page persuasive essay on an internet forum explaining why i feel bikes do not always need to adhere to traffic laws. Also, to the person that said "because it's the law." Have a fun life with that mindset. |
I usually run stop signs, but always make sure I'm not hit

Haha guys, i'm sorry that my initial post went straight to the absurd portion of the thread that I new this would develop to anyway. The talk of so-called "intelligent discussion" of stop signs on this forum is just like any other 15 page thread on here about brakeless riding, helmets, traffic laws, evil cars, etc. etc...
It doesn't matter that I "made it seem" like no stop should ever be stopped for on a bicycle. The point of my initial post, which was a response to a post someone had already made which, to summarize, said cyclists are ridiculous for thinking they belong on the road, yet not stoping at every sign. Like I said before, it is silly to think that every traffic law should apply to bicycles at all times. I forgot how sensitive people on this board are. Traffic laws are in place for a reason, but they also are designed around motor vehicles, which have much different reaction times and fields of vision, and it is stupid to believe that they appropriately apply to both modes of transportation equally (and i'm talking in real life terms, obviously legally they do apply equally, that was never my point of contention.) The reason I called reading comprehension into question was because I was accused of saying no bike should ever stop for a stop sign, which I never said. Then, because people don't get it and have to play johnny law, I had to reinforce that fact multiple times. You've all quoted my original post multiple times attempting to prove a point that isn't there. Good work, kids. |

Stop signs and lights are designed for cars. They are designed for 2 ton vehicles driving 30+miles an hour. Even if a car and cyclist are traveling the same rate of speed, the cyclist should stop much faster than a car will.

..............etc etc . As basically everyone but you has recognized, your original post didn't say jack crap. You acted like a jerk, insulted the quoted poster, and made no point. It's not about us being sensitive-- except for you and your antics, everyone's managed to keep their cool and have a reasonable discussion. If your original post had been as calm as the above, you wouldn't be in the position of having to explain yourself multiple times. Don't try to fob your error off on us, pal. If you're man enough to throw around the insults, then you should be man enough to suck it up and admit that you're wrong. |
willypilgrim has a point. Formally, and to put it in perhaps the nerdiest possible way, "not every x is F" is not equivalent with "no x is F". His detractors in this thread have made an elementary error in logic.

"Why is it that people are stupid enough to believe crap like this?" As a thesis statement, it seems to preclude logic. However, 'm not arguing his position: he's entitled to it, and is responsible for what laws he breaks. But if he's not willing to post his opinion in a reasonable way, then I'm not willing to take the time and consider the 'logic' it may contain. |
Back to the original post.
I'll slow roll thorugh stop signs but always stop at red lights. I'll only run through them if they are activated by sensors. Rather then sit there until doomsday, I'l stop and make sure nothing is coming then continue on. |

All poodles are dogs but not all dogs are poodles. Or in terms WillyPilgrim may someday understand: Sometimes you're the bug, sometimes you're the windshield. |
I did a rolling stop (slowed down and looked), and got pulled over. No cars even near the intersection besides the cop behind me. I did a rolling stop as a courtesy to allow the car to pass sooner. I did not realize it was an officer, otherwise I would have definitely stopped.

Almost killed a guy on a fixie today who ran a red, luckily he didnt panic and i saw him soon enough to stop so he could swere around me. I kind of felt like a dick, but he had a red. I was just glad i didnt cream him, and that he didnt yell/give me the finger.
Basically, i dont stop at every stop sign/red light, but im prepared to stop if i have to. |
I don't concern myself with what other people choose to do at stop lights & stop signs, not being a cop plays a large part in that. I do like reading the arguments though, my favourite is the:
"It takes so much energy to stop and start, my wee widdle wegs start to bweed sweats and cwhy and then I cwhy too! Momma!" single speed, road, mtb, fixed, doesn't matter, some among all of them give that argument. Safety arguments, political, ignorance, etc all hold more water for me than that one :D |
