"posers!"

my wife and i were out for a ride today, when some "fixie bro" rode past us and yelled "posers!"

i didnt hear it, but a few blocks later my wife asked me what a bike poser is. i have no idea. she told me about the dude, who i didnt really even see, other than in my perhipheral... i was paying more attention to the rush hour city traffic.

i mean, we were actually riding our bikes. is that not what they are for?

maybe the guy could tell we own a car or two, and therefore we arent "core"?

if the guy is on this forum, would you please enlighten me as to how i can be more "true to the game" of owning and operating a bicycle? is there a shirt, or a pair of shoes i can get, so as not to be so blatant about being nothing more than an interloper?

I would just ignore such people. Odds are the guy only got a bike a few months ago and uses phrases like "bike culture" often.

I like this thread already...

I am a poser. I've always been a poser, even as a child, when it came to hobbies....especially when it came to bikes. I will always be a poser, on and off the bike.

Anyone who prefers tupac over biggie is a poser in my mind. You say you're on the East coast?

I live in a fairly well to do neighborhood with a very large, well stocked LBS. Pretty good people but they obviously make a lot more money selling high-end kit to my neighbors than a 16T cog to a "fixie bro" like me. I regularly see these purchases & their owners out riding and almost to a man/women they are an unfriendly crowd I guess my home-brew fixie isn't really visible from a carbon-fiber mount? Or is it that they don't like being passed by a bike that's worth less than their seatpost?

Obviously you just dont have enough 'cool' fixie bro points. Its like a game, a game where you buy more cool new toys to win. You need to up your status by purchasing the following immediately: 1) Bianchi Pista 2) Velocity deep Vs 3) Riser bars 4) Top tube protector 5) Spoke cards

Start with those, next time you see that guy he will be completely floored at your new found bike culture status.

well, i have to admit, two of my bikes have deep Vs, and those same bikes have risers, but i suppose the lack of other "fixie" accoutremon might have been what caused the harsh judgement which was handed down by my fellow cyclist. maybe it was because the bike i was riding today had black deep Vs, and not white ones?

damn. i really need to get with it.

where do i score some of these "spoke cards" you speak of? will they make me go faster?

I do hope what I said was taken as sarcasm. I own none of those mentioned parts, and if I did I would just ride them enoyably as the bike I do I own. Even though the ones I mentioned were about the most cliche fixie things I could think of off the top of my head. If I didnt have a wheelset that worked just fine I could see myself throwing money at a set of deep Vs. Though risers I dont know if I could do, I like my drops.

Ride for fun. Theres no need for this elitism and animosity towards other cyclists. We are such a small minority we need to stick together.

he was warning you of some heavy equipment coming up in the lanes. he actually said

'Dozers!

not that you wouldn't have seen them, being construction yellow and whatnot.

I figured there was sarcasm at work... hence my smart alecky post in support.

Careful though, eventually there's bound to be some reason for elitism... what I'm not sure, but it's bound to pop up.
