What's the point of the light on kryptonite keys?
Does anyone know what the point of the light on the key for the New York 3000 lock is? Is it to see the key hole? That doesn't make a lot of sense, if it's dark enough out that you can't see the key hole and you need a light, than you probably shouldn't be out riding because a meteor hit and the sun had been blocked out. Any city where you need an NY3000 lock should be well lit enough that you don't need a light on your key. Anyone have any ideas why they put the light on it?

Just because the streets are lit doesn't mean where you lock up is lit. Personally, I like that feature when I am locking/unlocking at 4am

convenience.
market-appeal. |
To see the keyhole at night. For people silly enough to try to lock their bike in the darkest of black-hole alleyways.

You can shine it anywhere you please....anything that needs lighting, it can help some.

I've used it before at the door to my apt too because my landlord is too cheap to run a streetlight.

But do you really need an NY3000 outside of the city? Are there a lot of non-city 'high crime zones' as the lock is designed for? I mean obviously the point of the light is to illuminate things, that's the point of any light, it just seems like a needless feature.
|
I know I know, I'm not saying you can't use it elsewhere. I do, but from the engineer at kryptonite's view the NY3000 was designed for use in a high crime city. Yes it will be used in suburban and rural areas too, but that was not what Kryptonite's engineers were designing for primarily.
|
I'm also not saying I don't like it, or wish it wasn't there. It's fun to play with, I'm kind of a fiddler, I'm just curious if there was some reason they decided to make it, seems like they could get rid of it and save themselves some money per lock. The cost per lock is probably marginal, but I'm sure it would add up over time.

Why do new cell phones have cameras in them? Why does my car have a CD player?

The CD Player in the car is a little bit more superfluous, but still has reasonable functionality. You certainly don't need it but it provides a little bit of enjoyment from something like driving, which I hate with a passion. At least you get to listen to music you chose while doing the deed instead of some market driven BS pop-punk/R&B |
This thread = gibberish.
PS Also, not fixed/ss specific, so maybe it should be moved? |
i found it funny streetlightpoet was the first to respond to this thread.
that's all |
actually that's not all... i just had a couple of awesome ideas for the keylight...
why not bust out the key and spell out fxd4evr in morse code the when you see another fixed rider? you know, as a show of solidarity... also, who says you're using the key to 'unlock' your bike? you could totally check for potential 'students' who are in dire need of a nighttime security/locking lesson... shine that ******* down on all the bikes you see, and you can tell if the wheels are QR (not to mention worth stealing, erm to teach a lesson, of course). |
It's actually common in many locks, not just the NYC, my on-guard has one.

hmm, so he did...
-1 me, +1 deathhare. |
maybe its because i have a bad headache today, but this is the stupidest quibble i have ever heard of. its a ****ing lock. it has a ****ing light on its god damned key. it has been immediately determined what that light's function is. why is this light still getting nit-picked over?
i speak for krypto keys with lights everywhere when i say "GET OFF MY BACK MOM" |
