Skid Marks: Not Just for Underwear
I've never been one to "waste" tires so I don't skid much but I decided I was going to buy new tires this weekend.
Consequently, I spent the last hour skidding all over my neighborhood. In the excitement of my recently acquired skills (as fixed gear is newish to me), I would sprint to 25mph + and leave serpentine 50 foot skids all over the new asphalt they laid out.
Nothing like marking my territory with rubber.
I learned that the body rotation creates the rear end to move in the same direction. I learned that you can change the direction of the rotation mid angle to create ever fancier marks. I learned that skids are the most fun when done from over 25 mph. Also, drifting corners=sickness. Of course the far forward you are, the easier it is to extend, rotate and control your skid.
Share your skidding stories and tips.

Meh, I like doing this too, I went through my stock tires in less than 3 outings. Now I'm on Specialized All Season Pro's. Thats what the guy at the store made me buy. I have to practice for this thing on October 4th in my area. Then we will see how long they last, and how fancy I can get.

I'm buying some skinny cross tires for my Pista tomorrow so I can ring in the PDX cross season on a fixed gear. That's why I decided to blow through my current ones. I feel slightly guilty destroying $45 race tires. The price of glory is steep.

Learn sit down skids, and than when the cops ask where your brakes are, simply tell them you're running a coaster and do one of those. Barnum and Balzer probably don't know the difference anyway.

I used to love to skid on my bmx when I was 10.
It was a redline with mag wheels. fat ass pegs also.

I thought this was going to be a picture thread and was going to post the pictures of the skid marks on the track but I can't find them anyway.

I'll bet you will have new soreness in your legs tomorrow if you were indeed previously a minimimal skidder.

I've been doing the same pattern of alternating (every half crank rotation) drift skids down a very steep section of my commute for a while now. The marks are quite pretty.
