How many of you pt II

So on a similar subject as the "how many of you use brakes" thread, how many of you wear helmets? When? Where? How often? I used to be off and on with my helmet, especially because I just had a skate helmet at the time. Well one day I decided it just seemed like I should wear my helmet and that day a woman in a minivan didn't see me and turned right in front of me with no time for me to stop. I don't know whether I used my helmet in that collision, but I'm certainly glad I had it. Also, as a bit of an afterthought, what kind of helmets do you wear if you wear one? Do you like it?

I protect my dome when traveling outside of the town limits (2-3 miles from my house) or after dark. Just a rule I use. I have a MET Stradivarius that I purchased while on tour in Ireland after I got hit my a van and broke my other one.

the red one:

very comfortable to wear and light. It looks a little buggy but keeps my head cool.

Hot days: cheapo Giro helmet.
Cold days/nights: cheapo but flashy Bell skate helmet.

always

im pretty sure i would have died on two different occasions now if i did not have a helmet on. those were big crashes. i've seen people strait break their heads open on small crashes. it doesn't take much.

i wear one all the time. i wore it about 30-50 percent of the time on short rides, but when i was hit by a car i now wear a helmet around 90% of the time and if i don't it's because i'm in a hurry to get somewhere and i simply forget.

I always wear a helmet. As a college student, I'm spending thousands of dollars to make my brain work good. Might as well spend $20 to protect the investment.

Giro Transfer, fits great, feels greats, looks fine. I feel naked if I'm on the road with no helmet.

Giro Atmos (road), Giro Hex (mtb).

If you feel like being motivated to buy a helmet, click the links in my sig. Multiple skull fractures and a fractured vertebra, four days in the hospital, one month unable to stand without a walker (vertigo), six weeks in a back brace, two months out of work. Lucky I didn't suffer adema or end up paralyzed.

If you don't have one, just buy a damn lid, please.

I always wear a helmet. I've destroyed several, both through my fault and the fault of others. Currently I have a Uvex RS which I think is a wonderful helmet.

I always wear a helmet. I used to leave it at home when going to the grocery store (four blocks from my house), but I moved further away, so I now wear it even then. Thankfully, I've never needed it, and I hope I never do, but I'm always glad it's there just in case.

I got a Giro Atmos on sale and it's a great helmet. It has something like 27 vents, so my head stays nice and cool when I ride, unlike my old helmet, which was a $20 Trek. Also, it fits the shape of my head perfectly, so it's really comfortable even when I wear a hat underneath. On longer rides I pretty much forget it's even there.

I don't wear one when commuting (generally less than 4 miles). I wear one when riding trails and such.

Probably has more to do with the issue of dealing with a helmet once it's off my head than anything else. I learned how to ride bmx without a helmet and didn't start wearing one until I screwed myself up rather badly highmarking a quarterpipe. Downhill was always a helmet scenario... XC... not always. Road... rarely. Especially if I'm on a single speed doing <10mile runs. I've been hit by cars several times to the point of hospitalization and a helmet wouldn't have helped in the least in any case. Maybe I'm one of the lucky few, but I've also been struck by lightning.

When I was younger, nobody road with helmets. They weren't widely available. I crashed my bike one block from my house. Spent 3 1/2 weeks in the hospital. Still feel pain 26 years later when the weather gets grumpy. Now I wear a helmet. Always. I usually try to ride with my Giro BMX helmet in NYC, it is better for a crash involving multiple impacts. For longer rides outside of the City, I have a Limar 911 and a Bell Ghisallo. There are a number of scars on and in my body that could have been prevented by the availability of the helmets we take for granted today.

First I find out SSFG people are using brakes, now you're saying you wear helmets too?

I wear mine 80% of the time. I don't worry about it on the days that I don't wear it, but I do like having it on my head just in case.

I always wear my helmet when I ride my road bike. Almost never on my commuters. There is no logic behind this decision, its just that I dont have a helmet that doesnt look ********.

+1, except to the improper grammar (keep spending, haha j/k). Giro Encinal here. 99.9% of the time.

Always, it is law over here, but hey, I've been saved by one. Met Strad II or Catlike Kompact Pro.

Catlike when I need to wear team kit or its a hill climb. Met when I want comfort, venting and the better look.

Stopped wearing my helmet when I stopped racing but recently decided I have been lucky and should reconsider my decision. So I went to purchase a new helmet. I tried on at least a dozen helmets in over 3 shops - none fit my big dome properly. My head is described as round-ish. I was willing to pay any price...I even tried on helmets with a $195 sticker price...if they would fit properly...nada!!!
Last week, I was in midtown with my kids and walked by a shop I haven't visited in a while. It was a miracle...they had 3, yes 3 helmets that actually fit my noggin, and the kicker...none were over $69 bucks.
I went with the Giro Encinal priced at $49.99 - super comfy, looks good, well vented, removable visor.
My problem is that I used my bike to run to quick meetings once in a while....dealing with helmet head is another issue. (Yes, I actually care what my hair looks like...shoot me!)

+ 1 on the Encinal
All of the time here. Sure i look like a dufus with a helmet on, but then again, riding SSFG isn't about looking cool, is it?

I hear that, homie.

...Capix sportscap all the time (good luck finding one in size L/XL). Next to no vents on it, but I rode it this summer with no real issues and I'll appreciate it in the upcoming months.

waaaay back in, like, '87 it became the rules that if you wanted to race you needed to wear a helmet. so i went out and bought one: a bell about the size of a snow tire. after a couple of days of it sitting on the couch i decided to wear it on my morning commute, just to get used to riding with it on.

sure enough after 10km i get clocked by a van and rocket straight into a retaining wall head first. cracked the helmet clean down the middle.

i've worn one every day since.
