Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

My Mom Rode Fixed....

Only she calls it riding a "constant" the other kids rode "coasters"

I was telling my Mom about riding fixed and she already knew all about it! Her and her brothers were riding constants 60+ years ago in Georgetown Guyana!

My Moms hipper then yours!

I don't care if she did or not, I just love the term "constant." That's perfect.

I thought most moms, dads, grandmas, & grandpas rode constants when they were kids...

I dig that term too.

i love hearing things like this cuz it's a reminder that there's some great history in cycling that we're a living extension of.

when i got my bfssfg iro this summer i showed my grandmother, cause i had been complaining all summer about how bad i wanted the bike and how delays kept making my mad and i lived with her so she heard my complaints daily. so i showed her an her eyes lit up and she told me all about how they used to ride fixed gear. except all her friends rode fixies and coaster brakes.

it's great. she told me about how they used to bomb north broad heading towards city hall.

your mom rides fixed

I was under the impression that the only bike baby-boomers ever rode as kids were Schwinn Stingrays. That's all they ever talk about here.

Older person: Nice bike.
Me: (knowing what's coming) Thanks...
Older person: you know, when I was younger, everyone rode...
Me: Stingrays?
Older person: (dissapointed) yes, that's right.

All a remember is some West Indies cooking at an "aunts" house in Montreal when we went up for visits. Mom never talks about Guyana much but she did light up a bit talking about bikes "constants" and her brothers.
