Converting my Miyata
i have a miyata 10 spead road bike that i want to convert to a single speed but i would like to use a free wheel so that i don't wear down my tires to quick from skidding if anyone knows how to do that please let me know thank you a lot

also you could conceivably have a fixed gear bike that has a brake or two so that you didnt need to skid

Uhh...yeah...this is one of those questions that can only come from an individual who needs to ride someone else's fixed gear bike before they should even consider converting their own.

What kind of Miyata do you have? Pics?
A Miyata isn't a bad bike and the high end ones were really pretty solid. I love mine and wouldn't convert it. What number is it? 310, 912, 1000? |

this is my bike what i'm really wondering is would i be able to use my stock freewheel and still have my bike single speed but able to cruise and i have rode fixed speeds and have one myself i just never converted one and would like on that is able to cruise |
well, the simplest way to make that a single speed, would be to remove the derailers and the shifters (non-destructivley, of course), and shorten the chain to fit around one of the existing cogs and one of the chainrings. the other cogs and ring will still be there doing nothing, but you'll have a fine cruising bike.
and you'll easily be able to change it back to a geared bike in the future. minimal cost (you may have to buy a chainbreak tool...those are around $15 or so) and quick work. good luck! |

Oh god...
If you do the most ghetto conversion ever by using the original freewheel, just make sure you get a good chainline. Otherwise, your chain will want to jump either to a smaller cog which will slacken the chain too much, or it will try to jump up to a larger cog and probably break the chain. |

No disrespect to the above Miyatas, but I broke a 714 where the aluminum tubes GLUE to the steel lugs. Extremely poor design.

It is nice! Frame is plenty stiff I switched the fork with a random aluminum one I had lying around and that has been a nice upgrade. Geometry is pretty snappy but a little stretched. All in all this frame has been a blast! Honestly my biggest qualms are with some of the components not the frame which is a good thing. I just found out the other day that with a 650cc front I could bar spin which was a pleasant surprise I will have to explore someday.
