Fixed gear tires

I've been getting a lot of flats on the back of my bike recently and yet I've checked the tire, etc and it seems solid. What kind of tires do you guys run on the rear? I want something strong and thick with good puncture protection and a long skid life. Sorry if this is hard to find. I've heard mixed reviews on the everlast tires and have considered gatorskins, but was unsure whether they were long lasting or just very puncture resistant. Thanks.

and a long skid life.
Nothing lasts long when you skid stop all the time. Get a brake and use it.

specialized armadillos hold up better than anything else ive tried. soma has some made for them that are supposed to be good, but armadillos are in my opinion heads above the rest for skidding longevity

this must be a joke. I ride pro2 in the front/t-serv in the back and I seriously doubt the pro2 would last even a week of leet brakeless riding

I will have a brake here very soon. I had one before, but I lost the shim for the handlebars that I have that fit a brake, so right now I'm awaiting the new shim to arrive by mail and in the mean time, I've been doing skips and stuff which is harder on a tire.

I love my soma's! 140psi is great and the tread life is great. the mixed reviews I heard were about the sidewalls cracking but if you keep your psi up I have not had any troubles. plus the somas come in colors which can be a plus if you want it.

PR2s are really nice tires, but they are a fairly soft race tire. The replacement cost would be a little stiff if you skid a lot, as well. The Krylion Carbons are a little more durable.

My rear tire is some POS 10 dollar thing that my friend had lying around his room. I have 15 skid patches and skip/skid every day. No flats and it's wearing evenly and slowly.

this is a joke right? I ride pro race 2's on my road bike.. I live in the city, and when I ride it I have to ride 2 miles or so on city streets before I can get to clear roads. That said I get a flat just about every 3rd time I ride it, for REAL.

I don't want to be a johnson, but if you ride pro race 2's in the city without getting flats; you probably don't ride very much.

what kind of punctures are you getting?

pinch flats? what's your pressure? what's your rim size? any burrs on the rim?

how are your nipples? pointy?

how's your rim tape? even all the way around?

how worn are your tires? threads showing?

what's your normal roll like? lots of rocks? debris? glass? metal?

if it's rear it's probably due to weight and PSI. that said, gatorskins or armadillos seem to be well liked, i'm hoping to get an armadillo or two for my next purchase.

+1
i've ridden a pro2 in the rear.
within 2 weeks, came close to skidding it out and a fatty puncture in the sidewall, actually patched the ****ing tire from the inside because of the fact that i stupidly paid 45 dollars for a tire i even more stupidly decided to place on my rear wheel.
long story short it lasted about one more month with it always being close to skidding out(which it eventually did) and the inside patch job bubbled out to about the size of a male gorillas scrotum in turn making me feel sketch about my ride at all times.

really not cool.
gatorskins ftw

I love my gatorskins. They last pretty long, even with the amount of skidding I do (kind of alot). I have flatted them twice in a total of 6 months, which is pretty good compared to other tires I have run. tonight I ran over half of a bottle, totally shattering it and nothing happened. They take the corners just great, even in the wet.

Bontrager hardcases are nice too, but they don't last quite as long as gators in my experience.

Keep this going, folks. I've searched all the past tire threads and they contradict each other so much it's making my tires lack confidence.

Maxxis Re-Fuse. I let a pair of those on eBay go without bidding. Fsk. Both geared racers and skidders seem to really like them, which can't be said for any other tire I know of.

There's probably exagerated focus on a tire's "feel" with racers, but I wonder if skidders are sometimes quick or overzealous to deem a certain tire has no durability and will disintigrate in 5 days.

A pointed question: I've got a Krylion Carbon up front and an Avocet slick on the back. Both 23mm. The rear is very grippy but prone to flats. The front lacks grip but handles well otherwise and has never had a flat. What falls somewhere in between? I hate having a puncture-resistant strip on my tread that I can feel and that effects handling, but I need something as opposed to the complete non-protection with Avocet.

i don't have a lot of experience in tires yet but what I have run so far:

Armadillo - mixed review since I had the turbo (i think that's what they were called)and that was a piece of junk in the skidding department. I didn't eve skid that much on them and a two chunks of the tire came off. they were excellent in flat proof. Now I have an all condition in the back and its been holding up very well. No flats yet in 4mnths

Bontranger hardcase sucks for skidding. i was done with it in two months (mind you i don't skid that often) but no flats in that time

Don't even thing about Continental Ultra Sport. They came at a great deal but they seem to have no tire protection whatsoever. I flatted 4 times in with them in under 2 months.

Vredestein ricorsos - holding up fine on me so far. they do feel like they wear out easy on skids but protection wise is not known at this time, 1 month in. they do feel fabulous though. they really have a low rolling resistance if that matters to you

I haven't plugged everwears in this thread yet!

5mm deep tread.

The sidewalls will wear out before the tread, however if you don't keep the pressure high the sidewalls will quickly deteriorate. The thickness does a fair job on puncture protection too.

I run a hardcase in front and an everwear in back for max heavy.

ive been considering those airless tires lately. the idea of never getting a flat seems almost to good to be true, but i suppose its a worthwhile investment. anyone know how they hold up with skidding? ide imagine eventually it gets like flat spots or something, sorta like skateboarding wheels do from too much power slides nah mean??

airless = bad idea. Plus they'll def flatspot and then you'll be bumpy.

Ricorsos are heavy. I mean, I rarely use that word because it usually refers to 10% differences in weight, but the Ricorsos are advertised as 300g (folding. 370g for the wire bead.).
