moral of the story:

don't lock your bikes to parking meters
unless you plan to ride around your town on beaters
or buck the hot trend, start carrying heaters
and if i go blind you know i'll just wear cheaters

The article doesn't even mention suspicions that he cut the parking meters in an effort to steal bikes. Obviously there is potential for that. But for all we know, some guy stole a bunch of parking meters because he wanted quarters for his laundry. Or he's obsessed with the number 123.

I bet he cut them down to get all of those invisible bikes we were talking about a couple of weeks ago.

There really isn't anything to discuss, but I thought it was impressive. Cutting a 3 inch steel tube must be difficult, and he was able to steal over a hundred without the police noticing. This implies that someone could easily steal just as many bikes if they were so inclined.

What we have here is a failure to communicate.

I guess it makes sense if you have a U-lock... I use a chain and you could probably easily lift it off of most single-head parking meters.

Oh yeah, well I use a mini U-lock, and it fits comfortably around my rear wheel and a parking meter.
