So The Guy Comes To Fix The Leaking Roof...

...at the house. It's early, I'm cranky...

...I wander outside to put up the car windows (it's raining). He exitedly tells me at that moment: "Hey man...I like your fixie!"

I have crossed over from unappreciated bike geek to cool guy with a track bike.

(To be fair, he liked the Raleigh 3-speed and carbon TT...but it was the Guerciotti that made me cool).

:)

cc700 10-03-07 08:30 AM

hahaha... yeah that happened to me while i was ordering a sandwich.

666pack 10-03-07 08:33 AM

my landlord likes my track bike.

jyossarian 10-03-07 08:50 AM

Yeah, more people compliment my plain jane Rob Roy than my other bikes.

kemmer 10-03-07 09:03 AM

Heh, people I talk to are all like "WTF? Your bike doesn't have any gears. Why doesn't your bike have any gears? My bike has 27 gears. I ride it twice a year!"

Either than or they know what's up and have nothing good to say about my old Peugeot other than to tell my my Ideale leather saddle is hard as ****.

Hobartlemagne 10-03-07 09:59 AM

On my club rides, people dont like it when I ride my fixie and pass their geared bikes.
Some get kinda macho and try to pass me again.

evoke0ne 10-03-07 10:06 AM

haha, club rides?...what about city riding, with cars.

I pass them at lights, and straight aways in 40km/hr zones or 50km/hr when its rush hour..and they get mad and fly past me... and honk their horns and yell and stuff...im sure im not the only one that gets a hard time.

I already knew I was uncool to other cyclists.

I was surprised to learn that I am secretly admired by the pedestrians...

Our club entriely rides on roads- we've been honked at, yelled at, fortunately not driven over yet.

most people notice the fact that my bike has no brakes before the gears...or that's just what they mention first. i just tell 'em it's just like a coaster brake.

TehK 10-03-07 10:17 AM

Just the other day, I was eating lunch on campus with my TT next to me, and had a teacher/ masters student come up to me and basically tell me his life story, just because he rides fixed and loved my bike. He also said if he ever taught me, I'd get an A just because of my bike. It's really cool how people can connect on such a basic level =]

TheRobbStory 10-03-07 10:20 AM

My mom likes my track bike.

roadfix 10-03-07 10:25 AM

It's funny how my gray primered beater fixie gets more comments and questions coming from strangers than my other geared bikes costing thousands more. :D

doofo 10-03-07 10:55 AM

i laugh at the same thing ^

people cant tell the difference between a $500 bike and a $3000 one

though lots of these are the same people who think $500 is a lot to spend on a bike

and who cant imagine spending the 3k

dirtyphotons 10-03-07 11:00 AM

funny, i'd much rather meet people who are not impressed that i ride a fixed gear. oh well.

Yeah same here

kjohnnytarr 10-03-07 11:46 AM

People like my bike just for the color. Which is fine with me, I built it just by throwing together every neon-green component I could find.

willypilgrim 10-03-07 12:02 PM

Most of the time i just get people saying it looks fast or asking if it's a race bike. Also, the brakes thing.

roadfix 10-03-07 12:06 PM

Most strangers are intrigued by the simplicity of the fixie.

filtersweep 10-03-07 12:42 PM

It is code.... you just got hit on. By your landlord.

I'm kind of offended and shocked that no one has said this up to this point, so here goes...

Your mom likes my track bike, too.

Anyway, I get lots of random strangers looking at my bike when it's locked up and talking to me about it, but I think it's mostly because of the blue rims and silver sparkly white paint.

deathhare 10-03-07 01:55 PM

Some guy: "Hey, thats a peloton bike, right?"
Me: What?

Fugazi Dave 10-03-07 01:59 PM

Random compliments are nice. Today I was trackstanding at a stoplight downtown waiting to turn left going to the post office, and this big guy in a well-worn plumber's van starts talking to me and telling me how impressed he is. Talked to me until the light turned green and let me go ahead of him. It was nice - certainly a nice change from people busting u-turns directly in front of me and trying to take my right of way...

In Absentia 10-03-07 02:03 PM

As far as compliments go, I've found that they're pretty split between whatever fixed bike I'm riding and my Volpe. The compliments on the Volpe are usually from other cyclists, though, and the comments on the fixed (mostly for my Schwinn conversion) are usually from non-cyclists, so I guess it kind of holds up.

One night I even got a compliment on my HID headlight from a girl on the sidewalk. That was the last thing I expected. :D

Foamer 10-03-07 02:12 PM

I've been spreading the fixed disease down here at school...I let people ride it all the time and I can see them get that look in there eyes and I know they caught the bug :)
