New Crank
Here's a long story made very short: I broke my crank and am buying a new one. I've been using a 170mm old Sakae road crank with one ring. Now I am looking at either a 1990s SunTour Cyclone 160mm road crank ($80) with 42 and 52t chainrings (I use 52) and a new Sugino RD singlespeed 165mm crank with a 48t ring which I'd replace ($75).
I'm having a hard time deciding which one to get. I really like the SunTour and if it were 165mm I would have it right now, but I'm a little concerned about the length. 170mm is the shortest I've ridden on anything except as a kid. Will going down 10mm be a big deal? I like this one better because I really like old SunTour stuff and may want to gear up with it on a different bike. I like the Sugino because it is a single speed crank and is 165mm. I don't have the means to ride with either of them. What do you guys think? |

Dude, didn't you learn your lesson from statement #1? Buy new and you know what you are getting. Buy used and you have no idea what you are getting. Buy 15+ year old used and you REALLY have no idea what you are getting. |
Oh, my bad. I thought the 1990s suntour was a used set.
Well, if you are building a Singlespeed/Fixed Gear, then why not buy Singlespeed/Fixed Gear specific parts? |
You will get ~10% less power with 10mm shorter cranks:

RD chainline is messed up, I'm tired of typing it out but if you look through my old posts you will learn all about it. Get something else.
