So I'm pretty sure the only way to do this is to use a vise, right? Anyone done this successfully without messing up the hub?

Someone told me I wouldn't be able to build the wheel with the cog on there, that it wouldn't be possible to get the spokes in there, that is. Is this also true?

You might be able to get the spokes in there (they can flex a bit) but your best bet is a vise plus blocks of soft wood/rags.

i cant think how you would get it off without wrecking it. you would have to clamp in a vice to the point of starting to flatten it to get enough torque.

actually... better idea... build just half the wheel. as in just lace the other flange. and get the spokes as tight as you can... that might work. then get the cog off, unbuild it, and rebuild the whole thing.

try that and let us know how it goes.

Probably someone just bolt cuttered the spokes on a wheel with the cog still on.

You could take the time you would have spent trying to do this (and failed), but instead use that same amount of time to earn an extra $60-$100..then buy a new hub and cog.

Slit the cog with a cutoff wheel on a dremal. Cut just down to the crest of the threads but not into them. Make two cuts 180 degrees apart.

Safety glasses a must. I'd use a dust mask too. Buy a bunch of wheels your going to shatter many of them.

I've never tried this so If you do and it works let us know?

A vice, 2 blocks of wood, and a chain whip is all that is needed. This is not an impossible task, just take your time.

It will take a lot less than an hour to stick a hub in between two bits of wood in a vice and whip off a cog. Had to do it all the time at the LBS I worked at.

see im betting i can lace this thing up with the cog there.

they came out without having to cut the spokes, so i imagine they can go back in the same way they came out.

Have someone hold the hub really tight with both hands. Then, with a plastic tipped hammer, rap the cog soundly in the direction of unscrewing. The quick shock will break it free.
