I'll bring a couple of extra rear blinkies. I don't have any extra fronts. Look for this bike, sans trailer.

As a native Portlander, this is so terrible...growing up around bikes in the roads was part of my upbringing, and as I learned to drive in Portland I learned to be aware of bikes around me at all times, especially in the scenario described in the "accident."
After coming home from Munich, Germany where I spent the last year, I realized how lucky (or smart?) they are to have literally bike SIDEWALKS. Half of the sidewalk is painted bright red and specifically designated as ONLY for bikes.
I hope something good can come out of this poor young woman's life. I wish you guys didn't have to ride for her.

live free or die trying
so she was in the bike lane and the truck cut her off making a right turn? typical.
it's too bad this sort of thing has to happen when drivers of multi-ton trucks are dumbasses. god, i hate drivers sometimes. but, that's also why i never pass on the right unless i have to, and i'm cautious if i do. it sucks too that with bike lanes there, she probably felt like she had no right to be any safer place. this is why i don't like bike lanes.
this is sad...i hope it opens some people's eyes.

wait...i just read the comments more--they're not presecuting or investigating more or anything?
and re-reading the original story, the attitude of the police seemed to be one big shrug. i guess if she'd been riding a brakeless fixed gear they would have cared.
this is ****ed.

No, no. Read the comment from "PoPo". He's a police officer and probably one of the only ones truly friendly to us. I know him. By not issuing a citation now, they make it easier for the D.A. to make a more serious charge after they review the case. I'm not saying that's going to happen for sure, but if they issue a ticket now, it makes it harder for the D.A. to prosecute something bigger later.
Lurker for Life
I drive through that intersection every morning. Unfortunately, there are a lot of close calls there.
You might consider cross-posting this in the Pacific Northwest forum, since it affects all of us.
Edit: I see donnamb already did.

big ring
I rode my bike and waited for the light at this corner tonight. It was so eery to know that someone died where I stood 24 hours earlier. The bike pictured above was filled with flowers...

The ride and vigil at the scene were very powerful. It was good to meet Johnny Pockets and Toddistic, even under these circumstances. We're very fortunate to have a great photographer like Jonathan Maus (and others) recording moments of our life here.
