Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Friends that don't (can't) ride bikes...

Man, this really damps me. I've got friends visiting from out of town, and normally we'd have a super weekend of bike shenanigans, but one of them doesn't know how to ride. It's like Jules and his girlfriend in Pulp Fiction; I'll have to be on foot most of the weekend. Not saying we won't have mad fun, but still...

I just had to get that off my chest, like breast reduction.

Get pegs
Get a raked out fork and front rack
Get a rear rack
Get a trailer
Get a tandem
Have a friend sit sideways on the toptube while you hold the handlebars around her

Shouldn't be a problem. I never settle when i have friends that don't ride, you just need options.

I tried the side-saddle carry with a friend, but I'm too tall and my legs were dragging the ground

first two seem boring. however sitting on the top tube sounds ridiculously fun and at the same time incredibly dangerous!

i love the no mercy attitude of not riding bikes.

I have way too many friends who deride me when I say "why don't you ride your bike?" to a transportation conundrum or something. **** them. Seriously.

Frame standers, for those who might don't know, are these:

Does anyone here actually ever haul someone on a non-tandem / non-xtracycle for any significant distance? Longest I've used these babies is for a block or so.

Those frame standers look pretty sweet I might have to look into those just for fun, but what about teaching them? I invited a friend to go ride with me once, and ended up teaching him which was a ton of fun! I say do that if there is time.

i pull 70+ pounds of records on a trailer for miles when im djing. in addition to all the ways i mentioned above, i've pulled my current girlfriend sitting on top of my record boxes (200 lbs combined) on the trailer all the way home from parties, on average about 5 miles each way, including crossing the williamsburg or manhattan bridge. its not impossible, and it sure beats getting home an hour earlier than her if she waited for the subway bus, or wasting the $15 on a car service. also gives for some nice conversation time.

as much as i love frame standers i would veer away from those for a non-bike riding person. they might not be used to leaning into turns, or get nervous about stopping distances or where to hold onto you. make it simpler/safer if you can.

Dude, hand them a cruiser and say "Here, figure it out, its really not hard". But sriously take some time and show them how, they will appreciate it later.

If they are Asian tell them they are gonna get their card pulled.

Actually, how long would it take to teach an adult to ride...seriously?

Pull the cranks off, lower the seat, and let the him/her/it push it like a velocipede until they figure out how to balance. I'll bet you could accomplish this in a day, easy.

It was Vinnie who was with Mrs. Wallace in Pulp Fiction, not Jules and his girlfriend.

I used to carry my friend by having her sit on the saddle holding my shoulders and pointing her legs back while I stood and pedaled. We've gone all around town that way without too much trouble. Just make sure you aren't putting too much weight on the bike, because I've seen other people bust their **** that way.

you know what i love seeing speaking of pegs... i love love love seeing brakeless conversions with no toe clips and pegs. and then i love seeing the owner of that bike ride that bike with no hangs on his cell phone.
