Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? irony?

So, I (as do many others here) ride a brakeless fixie. My friends who ride bikes with gears and brakes tell me that it's dumb, and that I'm going to injure myself sooner or later, at which point I will become the subject of ridicule.

Well, I finally did crash it. And it had NOTHING to do with the fact that it's a brakeless fixie. I hit a spot of oil some careless motorist failed to clean up, and went down, mostly landing on my face. Got 5 stitches in my chin.

Hah. Shows them. Dumb friends.

Yeah. The oil spot was underneath a puddle of water, and was really slick. You know when you hit the oil slick in the NES video games, and the little car spins out instantly? Turns out that isn't that far from the truth.

A construction worker saw it happen, and said that I was the second cyclist he'd seen go down there. I might get a bag of kitty litter and spread it on the spot so no one else wipes out there.

just some **** luck. this 'sorta' happened to me when i was younger riding my walmart mountain bike home from summer camp. hit a reeeeally sweet crack in the road and flipped right over, with an outcome of 6 stitches on my chin. and with that being my first case in needing to get stitches, it opened a whole other world up for me.

Sure it is. "Irony: A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects." (OED) The one time I crash a bike that my friends tell me is 'dangerous,' it has nothing to do with the bike itself. I know it's not related. That's what makes it ironic. What it 'shows them' is that the bike I choose to ride was not what made me crash, contrary to what they predicted.

Jeez guys, just making conversation. Just trying to see/point out the humor in the situation, rather than just complaining.

I know how it goes man. My friends always told me that I'd end up in a hospital from riding my brakeless freewheel around. One day this dude comes up and shoots me in the face. I ended up in the hospital and it had NOTHING to do with my bike at ALL! Showed those ******baggity friends what was up. Screw them. I hate my friends and hope they die.
