Taking from the garbage is not stealing. I'm not a lawyer, but I'm pretty sure that the courts have ruled thusly.

oddly enough there was an article in the nytimes this past week about NYC cracking down on people "stealing" items from the city's recycling program (aka picking up things from the curbside); it's ticketable though, not a criminal charge.

but I'd have to agree with you dwaine, in general you'd be hard pressed to find many people being charged for taking salvageable items out of people's garbage (once it's at the curb).

kemmer, do you have any more details reflecting what, exactly, you were charged with... and were you ever prosecuted?

definitely is illegal. when i was younger i was close to getting arrested for taking stuff out of a walmart dumpster. walmart claims it's their dumpster so everything in it is still their's. sounds like it would hold up in court...as stupid as it is.

Walmart's dumpster is on their property, still under their control, still their property... I was talking about garbage on the curb, which is different.

I got stopped by a cop once while towing my friend on his bike with my cable lock. (he broke a crank arm so I dragged his fat ass home) He didn't give us much hassle, just thought it looked a little suspect.

the first thing that goes thru my head when I see someone ghostriding a bike is "f***ing bike theives".

That being said, a week ago I carried my road bike frame on my shoulder while I was riding it to the shop to get it straightened and aligned. I sure got some wierd looks.
