STOPPING next to a COP to chat about your brake http://i24.tinypic.com/f2kc54.png

"demonstrate a skid on dry pavement"
The original post states: "He said he comming to a light and skidded to a stop in plenty of time for the intersection..." You could of course get some brakes like my now-stolen mountain bike had, that couldn't possibly skid anything and required some advance planning to stop. But, they LOOKED like brakes! |

srsly, what kind of idiot doesn't put a brake on their bike? ..If you only ride your bike to and from the velodrome, then yeah okay. . -what you have there is a 'track bike'.. But if you are riding brakeless in city traffic, then surely you are an idiot who deserves the fine. Who's going to be paying your freaking hospital bills - when you are stuck in a vegetative state because you were too cheap to buy a brake?? ..Yeah, and I bet you don't even wear a helmet. No brake, no helmet.. Somebody should really cut your balls off before you are able to raise more little ppl to think as you do.

i think nickatina has mentioned this in a previous thread before but honestly,
just learn to skid sitting down and tell the cop you have a coaster brake. he/she isnt going to apprehend your bicycle and check whether or not you're telling the truth. that would be insanely funny though. or just get a front brake |
I am pretty sure its a law in california to run a brake. I have front brakes, in a box. I live in the suburbs and take side routes to avoid major roads. I plan on putting brakes back on, not sure when.
|
People w/out brakes show that *********** can be taken to a whole new level.
|
just shut up.
Riding brakeless is dangerous Riding without a helmet is dangerous People do stupid and dangerous things Can we all agree to not have these threads anymore? |

so the law cant accommodate the subtlety that is hipsterism

WHY NOT JUST PUT A FOCKING BRAKE ON YOUR BIKE?
What is the big f*cing deal here? Am I missing something? IF YOU HAVE A BRAKE, YOU CAN STILL SKID STOP. Go to hell with all this fashion bike bullsh!it. Yes, I have a track bike (sans brake)...but it's drilled for brakes and I will slap one on there in a second if I need to, no problem. I ride it around parks and velodromes. No big deal. I also have a geared bike, MTB, etc. Enjoy your $90 fashion tax...or the much worse $X amount medical bill/Darwin award/tombstone. |
It's a law in CA too.

I wasn't injured, but it was a very eye-opening experience. Tomorrow I'm going to buy a new chain (tonight I went nuts online to trackosaurusrex.com/ and eventually to biciconcepts.com/custompad.html for a custom pad and some other gear) from the locally owned coop downtown and see about getting a front break and also some new toe clips as I snapped my left one in the accident. Not so bad as I break usually with my right foot anywhoo. Skidding is pretty fun. You can get really creative and swerve around corners and the like. It's a lot of fun. I like it and definitely practice around Santa Cruz, a very ideal spot scene wise and super bike friendly. It takes a certain degree of control, but I like the challenge of trying to get better at that skill. In any case, bikes with normal gears and derailleurs and the like feel awkward to me now. I'm used to the motion of constant pedaling. I like being able go fast and I like my fixie. CATCH THE FIXED GEAR FEVER, BROTHER. |
I double parked today and got a ticket.
****ing cops. |
Well it looks like the cops taking law into their own hands (after all if you can skid stop you meet the laws requirements) has transcended from PDX down to Eugene.
The whole issue with it here is documented here very well: http://bikeportland.org/cats/news/fixed-gear-ruling/ |
Just because piggies ride around in cars with brakes does not mean someone who knows how to operate a bicycle properly cannot stop. Don't ever stop and talk to them, make them chase you and see if they can catch up. I know I can get to places a car cannot.
|
brakelesss rules! youre all just bummed you cant stop a bike without handbrakes... stop hating on our skillz
|
I don't wear a helment because it leaves tan stripes on my head.

i had some fixed idiot almost run into my car last week while trying to pull some dumb assed skid, in an area i ride all the time, and can honestly say, there was no need for such a skid other than trying to show off, which i have no problem with given space and place, but in the middle of traffic, almost making me hit him was probably not that place... |
ok, i like you better in this thread.

One of the best things I ever read on bikesnob:
"In the documentary category comes this hard-hitting expose. The hypocrisy of the "system" is ultimately exposed when she demonstrates that she can stop almost as quickly as a bike with a coaster brake--in other words she can go from 10mph to a dead stop in less than 20 yards." so was it one of those "hey look at me, i can ride brakeless fishtailing trying to pop the back tire skids" that it seems like everyone's doing these days, or was it a controlled skip/skid to stop, trying not to scream out to everyone, "look at me..." ending with endless trackstanding trying to be the ****?
