I have a single speed bike that I really like. And I had a road bike. I ride both. But this morning a rubber ponytail holder got caught in the derailleur, locked in up, and it broke. Thowing me from the bike. It is probably time to fix my road bike.

Thats how I started down the road to fixed. Derailleur ate itself. All the way across town. At midnight. In February. I wish I would have thought to shorten the chain and ride it SS home as I had a chain break in my bag, but I was sooooo pissed and cold, I just walked all the way home. Took me two hours and it occured to me about the chain break when I got to my garage.

I was about 3.5 miles from home on a beer run to the store, at the bottom of a 2 mile long hill. I bought my beer, carried (the rear wheel was COMPLETELY locked) my bike, and drank three beers on the walk home. By the time I was home, I felt pretty good.

I remember the moment I decided to try fixed. I was riding my Peugeot up a hill on Rt. 6 with traffic streaming by. I stood to crank and bumped my knee into the stem shifters. (Stem shifters suck) It banged int high gear and threw me into the lane then off the bike. I was lucky I wasn't hit. It took me a while to get back on. I went home and ripped the gears off. The best thing since sliced bread.
