yeah, sorry, i didn't mean to build a roller set-up from scratch. i knew i saw the IROSprint set-up on here before i just didnt know what i was called :)

thanks for the software! gonna try and set something up locally by the beginning of '08. hopefully we'll be able to set it up at the university here and have some huge match-ups

I agree that real roller racing is way more fun but you'd get far fewer people racing. Plus Goldsprints are usually held at bars and some of those bars may not be happy with a ton of people bringing their bikes inside and also wouldn't be too happy with the liability issues.

Makes sense to me.

I think the potential for carnage is what is compelling me to do this in the first place. My lollers don't have a fork mount =]

That's awesome that the IROsprints make roller riding more accessible but if you never
start riding on rollers without the lockdown then you won't ever develop those skills--
start in a hallway--its easy it you are cautious about it and
stick your hands out when you start to fall--the IROsprint
thing looks damn fun in any event

And who says everyone wants to develop those skills? Not everyone who races goldsprints has or wants rollers.

Remember, this is a thread about roller racing, not a thread about riding on rollers.

No, i didnt say they suck based on appearance. And no i havent ridden that rig but i have ridden a bike more than a few times and i know its not like that. Ive also done tons of roller sprinting on BMX bikes. This irosprint thing sucks because its not your own bike and its locked down. Locked down being the stupidest part of their design of the thing beause it isnt at all like a real sprint. Real roller racing is way different. Where youre on ****ing rollers and its about a whole lot more than just cranking hard and long. It takes more skill and is more realistically like racing.
The irosprint rig just fails as a solution to something thats already been out there for decades.
Roller racing has been around since atleast the 40s man...it aint like this.

Im sure they have a blast with that rig though.

why not just avoid all the problems associated with setting up a roller race and actually just go to a track or set something up outside? Or are you going to throw the "bad weather" card out?

as far as rollers - you can save your breath. I am completely aware of the differences in set-ups on know the benefits to each.
thanks, I think

That girl is changing out of her pants while riding one handed, on a track bike, on rollers.

That takes some balls.

I was thinking of gluing a rare earth magnet on my lollers.. then bolting a hall effect sensor to the frame of it.. runnning that into 1 channel of my o-scope and querying it's frequency off GPIB. Feed that through a Labview GUI with some gearing dropdown menus, and a start stop button with race length selector and scoring.

or you could use a $20 cyclecomputer.

The point of the computer-based setup is to display the results on a big screen TV so bystanders can enjoy it. You could easily get more creative than the software I posted (it was just for my trainer at home) and put up flashy graphics. Think Guitar Hero or DDR, with lollers.

blickblocks 11-07-07 03:14 PM

From now on, BFSSFG should have a filter that changes instances of "Rollers" into "Lollers"

lol

Of the 5500 racers we've had at Rollapaluza in the last 12 months we've never had anyone complain about the front wheel replacement frames, because people who actually turn up soon realise it's inclusive, fun and a level playing field....open to all, cyclists or not, sober or drunk!....

There are a few traditionalists who've made negative comments on the interweb and they do have a point, they're also welcome to continue to take part in club roller-races between a dozen or so men in vests with one man and his dog as spectators.....if they never compete in front of 300 cheering spectators they won't know what they're missing!......

my friends an I are rather lazy one of them owns a cinelli sprint clock and we just use that

yup thats how we roll
and we are trying to make it a semi regular occurrence

it is fun side betting racing and beer yup fun all around
but don't bother if you don't know how to ride rollers

ecp8 08-28-08 10:17 AM

Goldsprints in Cincinnati has fixed fork mounts also - when you have people getting on these things for the first time after an alleycat and a few beers and riding their ass off for 500 meters the audience and equipment fair much better with them locked down. We originally had the rare earth magnet mounted on the rollers, but the smaller diameter of the rollers and the olympic-like speed of cincy riders maxed out the software's ability to "tick" the revolutions. We moved it to the crankarm and have not had any more trouble.

We've got a setup like the IROsprints here in New Orleans. opensprints.com has a lot of open source documentation on how to setup the hardware and software.

What about using a DC motor like:

Connect motor to the roller with belt or drive wheel and measure total output?

I know it would take some tweaking, but it might be easier that tryint to setup the magnet system.

good idea!
