There are several ways around it. The one going straight up Salmon/Park into Washington Park is a good gut buster for training. Montgomery/Patton is a nice ride that is not as steep, and flattens out at the top when you can go up to Fairmount for some low-traffic spinning, or down Humphrey or Hewett to Skyline. If you're looking for a longer ride, you can go around the West Hills on Terwilliger or Barbur and connect up with Multnomah. That puts you right in behind Alpenrose, then you can just wind up through Canyon Lane to Sylvan.

Take Salmon into Washington Park and follow the signs to the zoo. (Behind the Rose Garden.) It's only 3 miles or so. I ride it fixed 3 times per week at 48x18T.

People that ride and walk on Fairmount are idiots.

When I saw them, I just knew you guys would love them. Sorry I'm not a great photographer, and the huge crowd made it worse, but here are some pics of the Hufnagels.
A rather interesting Bike Friday.
I'll be putting up a big thread with all the pictures from the show in General. There really were bikes for everyone there.

It was the Hufnagel. The Ahearne wasn't a complete bike. I also numbered everything so I wouldn't forget which was which. They do resemble each other from certain angles, though.
