This was mentioned in an earlier post, but here's the link... |
Has anybody done business with this company? Are they reputable?
|
Performance? Yea, they're one of the larger mail order bike catalogs. I think they have retail stores in some areas too. I know people (LBS fans in particular) who think they are kinda Wal-Mart-ish and avoid them for ethical reasons, but they are reputable.

Lee at the Northpark store has in particular, been really good with getting my Fixed gear in order. Of course, I broke that, and have to get it looked back at.. but haven't had time. But, over all, I'm reluctant, but very happy with them. |
I try to purchase most things from my LBS, but I have also dealt extensively with Performance. Their customer service has been amazing. They gave me credit for some panniers I had used daily commuting for almost a year.
Hey your screen name looks like a scripture reference from the fixed gear bible. :D |
Before I worked in a shop I used to drive out to Chapelhill and buy stuff from Performance. They always had everything at a good price.
That said, they sell Giant as we do, and advertised the TCR composite(ultegra) for $1800(regular price is around $2500). People were wanting us to price match so we called them up to confirm stock. Turns out they didn't have any and couldn't get any. It was just a teaser. That said, buy stuff where you want just don't go into a local shop (any kind of shop) and bug them for info, get them to size you, fit you for a helmet, etc. if you just want to use this info to online buy.IMO, people that utilize this tactic should be whacked repeatedly in the shins with a cut down Yakima bar. |
Mmmm...Yakima bar...<drool>. OOPS! I was thinking of something else. By no means do I employ that tactic Rev. Chuck. This will actually be my first online purchase. I have and always will prefer to hand a person my money and walk out of the shop with the item in my hand. This build I'm working on will have items that were bought online mainly because my favorite shops do not stock items such as bullhorns, track cogs, and wheels with fixed hubs. With the more common items, I always purchase from the LBS. There is something about the smell of grease, the nod of understanding and the shiny bikes that you can never get from online stores.
