Surly Tugg-nutt on a Langster
Anybody ever try to mount a Surly Tugg-nutt chain tensioner on a Langster rear-facing drop-out? How'd it work out, if at all? Thanks.

I did it a long time ago. It worked well.

It works well, but I didn't like it aesthetically.
I prefer MKS tensioners. They have a 5mm for track bikes and an 8mm for Mountain Bikes. MKS tensioners don't have as much range of adjustment as Surly Tugg-nutts, which means I have a different chain for every cog and chain ring combination. I don't mind the extra chains. The MKS tensioners disappear in plain view, whereas, to me, the Surly Tugg-Nutts just shout "look at me." |
So the 5mm would work fine on a pista?

They work great. I have two MKS 8mm tensioners on my Surly Karate Monkey. When and if you intall MKS tensioners, the flat washer portion goes between the hub and the dropouts, and the MKS logo on the tensioner barrels goes outboard, away from the center of the bike; outboard left on the left tensioner and outboard right on the right tensioner. Start out with a chain a little too long, and shorten it a link if necessary. With a little experimentation, you can get the hex nut inside the barrel flush with the barrel. Experiment, and start with a chain one link too long. |

For the MKS would the Langster take the 8MM or the 5MM? I saw something about the 8MM for aluminum frames. Thanks.
