rim recommendations
what are everyone's favorite type of rims that can be bought new on the market?
i've got a few hubsets i've been meaning to build up, and am trying to avoid the standard Velocity Aerohead/Deep V or Mavic combinations. Anyone ride on Velocity Fusions or Aero's? DT Swiss rims? anything else? |
get something with eyelets. I just got a pair of aeroheads, and I wouldn't do it again. mavic or something else of equal quality
|
i want some velocity rims with phil hubs
|
lmao

I like Open Pros, but I'm contemplating a build with something old and super boxy just for fun.
Of course, I'm contemplating a ton of stuff, so that probably won't ever happen. |
this has been settled deep vs are superior to all other rims for all purposes they are so bombproof and look aewsomes in all the colors
|
One time I was riding through a bad part of town and a mugger jumped out of a dark shadow. My front deep V slid out of my fork, ran up to the mugger and beat him to death with a 16" rubber penis. Situations like that make me overlook the weight penalty.
|
funny.
my main wheelset is built on aeroheads and i've ridden the hell out of em' for almost two years with no problems. |
What is a good lightweight wheel?
|
As most people here till tell you Deep V's tend to be the thing these days, if not them open pro's.
On phils. I want Deep V's on phils 28 spoke front, 36 Rear. Laced in a radial crow's foot hybrid Light Weight wheel are not all they are cracked up to be IMO Those would be light enough for, and would Last. my ritchey DS 16 spoke front is not promising a long lifespan |
open pro
|
Problem for me is open pro are just so ugly.
I run araya gold front on the street, but live in a very smooth, over-engineered country. 8 months now riding every day, tubulars, one puncture in 8 months?! Deep V seems to be the best buy in terms of looks/options/cost/strength/availability........ |
Should mention that although only 1 puncture, I do change my rear tyre every 2 weeks.

DT Swiss RR 1.1
Light, in the price range, and strong. |
honestly, you dont get much stronger than 36hole, 3 cross, box rims.
sure deep v's are strong but theyre also heavy and in many cases more expensive. for what? colors? i think it all depends on what kind of frame you have. old track or road frames with skinny tubing look best with box rims. the more modern, fatter tubing of steel and especially aluminum track frames these days seem to go better with the deep look. IMO |
Aeroheads are a pretty good rim, I like my wheelset built with them a lot. Fusions are good too.
Those Saavedra Turbos a couple people have been posting look like the absolute coolest, though. |
my fusions held up great and took some of the worst crashes/conditions i have ever put wheels through and are still rideable.
|
I have Mavic OP laced to Phils for my clincher wheels. They are very strong but a bit heavier than my tubular Mavic Reflex hoops laced to high flange DA. (Both sets 32h 3X)
The popularity of Deep V's must be a style thing (as they come in colors; they nailed the FG market didn't they?)Deep V don't even have ferrules for the spke holes which allow for more even spoke tension and stress distribution. |
Mavic CXP33 is a really great rim that is often overlooked and underestimated, and a pleasure to actually build a wheel with...I've built two sets with CXP 33s and they have always resulted in perfectly round wheels with really even spoke tension. Other rims I have built tend to result in a less perfect wheel.
|
I too have a soft spot for the CXP-33s. Avoids the weight penalty of the Deep Vs. Nice and strong. Doesn't look too flash or predictable. Good on the street and on the track.

G*dd*m*t, is there not a reliable wheel longevity test out there somewhere? Seriously. I can't find one. Someone?
Otherwise, this is all a matter of opinion...as are 90% of the posts here....except for the Phil hubs...that's not opinion....that's a fact. |
