no more sympathy for pedestrians...

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

no more sympathy for pedestrians...

i've always looked fondly on pedestrians, at least they're not in cars. but today i nearly hit a crowd of idiots on their cell phones crossing in the middle of a block. at least one saw me as i neared them on the sidewalk, but they went as a group anyway. i yelled at them, but they didn't look, so i swerved into the opposing lane to avoid them and ended up nearly hitting one of them who was ahead of the others.

seriously, did their mothers never teach them to look both ways first?
then as i'm riding off they actually had the balls to yell at me.

Anger within you surges
Courteous you are not

Try riding a little slower and perhaps anticipating what other may or may not do.

Mount a cattle catcher on the front of your bike. Then you can plow right through the herd.

As you've no doubt already found out - the auto (or lack thereof) does not make the jerk. The actions of said individual make the individual a jerk.

either just slow down, use a bell, yell, swerve and completely ignore the fact that you almost flattened them and they yelled at you, maintain a straight course and stiff arm/flatten the most unlucky cell-phone weilding idiot (all while staying on your bike), or a combination of any of these... but losing your sympathy for/empathy with peds is a bit OD IMO

I agree with the OP...pedestrians are a hazard for bikes. Although I might get flamed for saying this, if they are on the phone or wearing headphones, they are much more likely to randomly step into the street on autopilot without looking, or without registering. Group-think is a problem too - people follow the leader without looking for themselves.

However, as cyclists we are in a position to second guess them. As I'm overtaking pedestrians from the rear, I always watch for evidence they may be about to step in my path. Often you can see them start to veer towards the curb, and you can ring a warning bell. I shoulder check before I pass pedestrians in case I have to swerve, and I move out a bit into the lane. If I can see headphones or a cellphone I am even more vigilant. Even if they are coming at 90 degrees and seem to see me, I don't trust them. They are looking for cars and may look right through a bike, or assume you will avoid them instead of vice versa, or they may underestimate a bike's speed.

So they are a hazard, and we need to protect ourselves from hazards.

Stopping is for roadies and commuters. Fixed gear freestylers do the figure 8.

Actually not all pedestrians are stupid.
Pedestrians are fine sometimes.
It should be, 'no sympathy for self-centered dips.hits that cross the street without looking".

Haha there should be laws against walking and texting/blackberrying. Trying to navigate through campus is ludicrous even on foot because of the presence of "slow walkers." Texters/blackerryers need a bit of a fright so that they poop their heads out of their butts.

There's a new, cross-town bike path in town that runs along a one-way street. There really needs to be some awareness campaign to warn pedestrians of bicycle traffic in the direction opposite to cars. Because of pedestrians wandering out into the path, as well as delivery vehicles double-parked, it's quicker to take the busy street just to the north. Something needs to be done.

But anyway, I don't think it's pedestrians, cyclists, cars, taxis, busses, street cleaners, etc that's the culprit. It's people whose vision is obscured by the walls of their own colon.

I had a slightly similar experience. Coming up to an intersection after work one night, a car and I got to the intersection at pretty much the exact same time. So I came to a complete stop and stood there for a sec till the car proceeded. The peds on the sidewalk on the street across from me, that were still several feet from cross walk. So I started to go at a brisk pace, about half way through the intersection they dont look any direction and walk right into the street. I lock up my back tire and skid on the wet pavement, the noise of which actually makes the woman look my way. She then proceeds to freak out and move back and forth making it harder to keep going so I just come to a stop and the proceed around them. The best part is she quite mad and yells "I wish I had a stick!" right at me as if she had the guts and conviction to beat me if she only had one. Before that I wasnt even mad, I didnt even care. But it took it from a minor inconvenience to her threatening me. I quip back "Well I wish I had a gun you dumb *****!" As I rode off she comes back with "Well…well…I wish I had a gun!".

I felt kind of vindicated that I at least managed to one up her verbally, but felt bad as by her not paying attention it actually just put a worse wrap on cyclists here.

Get them..NAY MAKE THEM see you as they cross (blood scream of JAYWALKER!! works wonders. Cut left, they go right... cut right , they go left, repeat, then buzz as close as possible in the middle of the street, so your bag goes 'wwwfff' on their jacket. Congratulations you've just made the ped do the Dance of DeathTM!!! Finish your shift and knock back a cold one.

one time i was riding to class and this cockbag decided that it would be really well-advised to step off of the curb onto the street while gabbing to some north face jacket **** on a cell phone without so much as turning his head to look. i was going somewhere in the range of 15-20mph and was no more than 10 feet away when he did this. i ****ing annihilated him. my front wheel apparently hit him squarely in the leg, launching me over the bike away from him and to the left, and the bike proceeded to flip up and knock him down. when i got up, i started yelling at him in a blur of ire, not realizing that the dude had the wind seriously knocked out of him. still pissed, i stopped yelling, got back on my bike, and rode away. i don't typically get that mad, but god damn.

meat pylons, peds, candidates for population control..... when in a pack they have the superpower to take up the whole 4 lane road.

Their only pro.... they are softer than a Prius.

Pedestrians are definitely annoying at times, but you gotta think -
If we run them down, scare them, etc. we're doing the same thing that we hate to have happen to us by motorists, right?

I'm just sayin'. . . karma.

Get you one of these.....

I ride with one on a chain around my neck if I'm gonna be downtown. A good blast of this whistle will wake up zombie pedestrians four blocks away from where you are. The ones in front of you will ****e themselves and jump four feet in the air. And you will laugh and laugh at their silly antics all the live long day.

Also, its very useful for waking up bluehairs as they drift into your lane in their pristine '72 Caprice Classic.
