Flats on a Gatorskin?

How often does this occur with you guys? I've had my gatorskins for less than a week and I've flatted already. I did hit a half-inch-raised driveway at a fairly high rate of speed though. Pinch flat? I've got these tires between 110-115 psi.

time bandit 11-28-07 08:34 PM

pump em higher.

trons 11-28-07 08:37 PM

don't worry about it

Ingleside 11-28-07 08:38 PM

sounds like a pinch flat.
110 to 115 should be good enough although i would put the back to 120.
it really depends on how much you weigh so play around with the pressure and dont ride onto curbs. if you do at least shift your weight around to unweight the tires as they roll up onto the curb.

furiousbob 11-28-07 08:50 PM

Max psi is 120 right? I did take the curb pretty fast, it was sorta unexpected though. Hm I guess I'll just get em to 120.

^135 for my rear.

If your tube has two holes in it like a snakebite, then you almost certainly pinch flatted.

My Bontrager Racelite Hard Case tires have a clever anti-PF mechanism, basically a series of raised rubber nubs along the bead that act as a shock absorber when a pinch happens. It seems to work; I've nailed a few things and not flatted yet.

 seriously?

My front had rim tape installed incorrectly. There's etape over one of the spoke holes and a hole punched through the rim tape for the stem hole. I checked the etape when fixing the flat, it just looked depressed into the hole but still intact.

for real. they recommend 120, but as discussed here previously, a little extra pressure doesnt hurt. i dont notice much of a "feel" difference, but my torque seems to have gone up from less rolling resistance.

I've ridden them on my roadie for over 700 miles. No problems whatsoever.

Only had mine on for a few weeks now but so far so good.

NitroPye 11-28-07 10:15 PM

So higher PSI == less flats?

Less pinch flats, which are caused by impact causing tires to compress and pinch the inner tube against the rims. Puncture resistance will not change.

I toured across the US using gatorskins and got tons of flats, about 20 flats in 60 days. I really don't think they're too great considering how I met others who just had a few flats the entire time. But yea they should be pumped up to 120psi if you can (it's written on the side) but they are certainly "mortal."

This was after about 2k miles:

i've had mine for a couple months but i don't ride THAT much. no flats yet. ridden over some glass, pebbles, too. :)

jgrant75 11-29-07 12:19 AM

+1 psi120 and bunny hop that stuff

furiousbob 11-29-07 12:22 AM

Okay so I'm pumping em to 130 tomorrow. 120 front.

I never get flats on my gatorskins, riding roads where lesser tires flat everyday. Perhaps you got a bad tire. I had a similar experience with Michelin Krylions. I had one pair that flatted almost every ride, then I got a new pair and they lasted 2000 miles without one flat. The quality is apparently variable.

captsven 11-29-07 07:11 AM

I rode a pair of ultra gatorskins all summer. I put about 3000 miles on them in Michigan without a single flat. That was the first time I did not get a flat all summer.

I shipped my bike to Napa Ca. for vacation in October. My second ride in Napa I got TWO flats on a ride. I discovered what a goat head is and they suck!!

So I guess what I am trying to saya is that it all depends on where you ride. I do like the Gatorskins and would recommend them to anyone.

Iam about 190 lbs. and ride both front and rear at 100 psi.

MrCjolsen 11-29-07 07:58 AM

Gatorskins will flat. But far less than many other tires, considering their weight and ride quality. They don't do well with nails and staples.

jens5 11-29-07 08:09 AM

I run Gator skins 700cx28's most of the time on a heavy Touring bike. Unless loaded, i keep the pressure a 100psi. I'm a Clyde at 235 and have had only one flat in almost 5000 miles. I switch out the tires for wear at about 2500 miles. So 4 Gatorskins x 5000 miles= 1 flat.

Only flats I have gotten have been from big hunks of glass or metal. Lots of super glue in them now. I only have to replace them when I skid through them.

furiousbob 11-29-07 11:38 AM

What's a goathead?

roderage 11-29-07 11:46 AM

trust me, you don't want to know what a goathead is.

antiguru 11-29-07 12:08 PM

mr tuffies + gatorskin has been pretty indestructible for me so far. commuting every day and long weekend rides.
