geared people are wussy
It snowed this morning, so instead of my usual Sunday morning road ride, I took the Monocog out for 17 miles on local trails. In the summer its usually about 99% geared squishies out there. Today, I saw about five other bikers on the trail, all singlespeeds, and no geared.

riding derailleurs in the snow sucks i guess.
|
It was only about 2" and very powdery, so I don't think the snow would have been a real problem for derailleurs.

It's cause they have jobs :)

Maybe all the other riders you saw just chose to ride ss and left the suspension and gears at home?

1. The problem isn't riding dérailleurs in the snow, but having to clean them off once you get back home. Sucks big time. And you have you give them at least a good wipe down if not a compressed air blowout - even the alloy ones have steel parts in them which will corrode rather quickly. 2. If it's cold and slushy, they can freeze up. 3. Most people who have multiple bikes can usually figure on their SS/FG as being the cheapest bike in the stable. If you're going to ride in lousy conditions, you don't want to take one of the good bikes. 4. Finally, never underestimate the determined craziness of a FG/SS rider. |
Cleaning a SSFG drivetrain is easy peas. All you really need is a rag and new oil.
