What we wear when we ride and why

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

What we wear when we ride and why

I thought it would be cool to see what gear everyone typically rides in and if anyone has any cool solutions to the problems biking and the weather can bring up.

I'll start

Legs: Dickies (rolled up) + Underarmor (winter)
Chest: Roma Bikes cycling jersey + Thermal shirt (winter) + Dickies jacket + more layers as colder
Hands: Mechanix Wear Full Finger gloves / Knitted mittens (winter)
Feet: Old old specialized MTB cleats + long wool socks (winter)
Head: Some old old helmet plus a wool cycling cap with it gets cold
Bag: One of those kemmer backslide bags (large)

Basically I commute to work so I have to change, so I have gotten into the habit of wearing short sleeve button down shirts (super nerdy but I'm a skinny programmer so it just makes me look "heroin chic") so that I don't have to change my shirt. I am also able to get away with black dickies and just rolling them down at work. I am trying to find a better outer layer for my jacket then the dickies jacket. It is all black, and not tapered in the arms at all so it pulls up. It was dirt cheap though. I absolutely LOVE mechanix wear gloves for some reason. They were $10 have no padding and I initially got them for summer gloves on my motorcycle. I'll wear them all season even in the summer because I like the protection on my hands (typing is essential to my employment..).

The other day I was walking out of my cube without my bike but in my full bike gear but I had argyle socks on pulled up for warmth and my pants rolled up. Some old hat, upper management, whiskey and cigars kinda guy saw me and burst out laughing in my face. I'm glad I me and him can't relate ...

Anyone else feel like imparting some of their typical ride gear...?

with many fixie riders, the look is often the most important thing.

Helmet - never, way not cool
Carhartt pants - yes, more mandatory than any cycling shorts
chin pubes aka goatee - necessary for at least 75% of all male riders
button down SS shirt - no jerseys needed.

Personally I wear cycling gear when I'm riding my bike & commuting

I ride in a pair of cargo shorts. I typically just wear a tshirt and I always keep a hoody in my bag. It stays a fair temp here in the south so occasionally we need to put on long sleeves but normally we don't unless its at night.

Now that its winter? I just wear whatever. Mostly all of my clothes are rather close fitting and if I just add some thermals from Target or the military surplus to what I would normally wear I am fine. Oh and wool socks, those are very important.

I am totally with you on the Mechanix gloves. If you get one size larger than you normally wear you can use some glove liners and they become indestructible gloves of warmth, which is neat.

I wear the full roadie kit: tights over bib tights, longsleeve jersey, windvest, toewarmers. After all, I ride a road bike; it just happens to have one gear and won't coast.

My only cycling specific wearable is my addidas spd shoes.

Right now its in the low 20's here

Legs- Jeans with thermals underneath
Torso/Arms - Tshirt, long sleeve thermal, hoodie
Face/Head - Ski Mask thing, its nice and thin, fits under my helmet
Hands - Some gloves I found in my basement for free

In warmer weather I'd just have jeans and a t shirt on. I'm also less likely to wear a helmet when it's nice out.

Whatever I happen to be wearing + gloves, clipless shoes, and a helmet. A jacket if it's cold. The normal roadie stuff for longer rides.

I usually wear skinny jeans, since they don't get caught and I don't have to roll them up, and since they make my hiney look nice.
Otherwise, I roll up my jeans. Don't really give a f*ck what brand name they are.

In the summer, I often go shirtless, to avoid getting it all sweaty. In the winter, I wear more than one shirt.

Really, I just ride in whatever I'm wearing anyway, except that I have to wear sneakers instead of boots.

T shirt
Levi's 511 rolled up
Vans
EAI Knit Gloves (pure sex)
(if it gets cold, a hoodie)

But I'm moving to Amsterdam at the end of January, so I need to buy some **** to keep me warm and dry. Maybe those cool arm and leg warmers I see people sporting. I'll keep an eye on this thread...

Edit* As to why? It's what I wear when I do everything. Plus it feels good to blow past 45 year old millionaires on their Ti bikes on the uphills in the Headlands while they are wearing their $500 outfits.

I wear cargo pants (rolled up), a t shirt, sweater if cold, and a helmet. I think I'm going to have to start wearing thermals. Oh and I wear Onitsuka Tigers Limber up Asian something... But i really like wearing my Asics Budokan as cycling shoes, since they fit in my clips the best and dont look too shabby either.

Today I rode my fixie with a polypro base layer, covered that in fleece, and covered that in my shell jacket and pants.

The boots and gloves are insulated and waterproof and I wore a face mask and ski goggles under my helmet.

What else can I add...the bike has fenders, front and rear racks, and a crapload of lights so people can see me when I'm riding on my winter commute.

And there is some stubble.

When it gets a little cool I'll pull out the cycling cap, some long socks and a jacket. It don't get too cold here so there is no need for anything more.
