marin has a ss 29'er on the cheap. $415 they say.
https://www.marinbikes.com/2008/us/bi...ilton_29er.php
granted it comes with rim brakes as stock but it's at least front disc compatible. the rear may be disc ready but i have yet to see one in person. the photo makes it hard to see, but if it's anything like the catalog (which claims that it has an eccentric bb and it does not) there may be a tab.

29'ers are so much fun to ride. I use mine mostly for bike polo.

That's interesting to hear about the Karate Monkey... I came close to buying one, but my friends talked me out of a 29er. They also convinced me to not go fully rigid. I'm building up a Fisher Cronus with a RockShox Tora 318 fork now.
You don't have to buy new wheels. The stock Monocog comes with hubs that are 6 bolt disc hubs. All anyone would need to buy would be the mechanical disc brakes and reuse the current brake levers.

I believe my LBS would give me a pretty solid deal on a Raleigh 08 XXIX. I am curious about some of these frames though $200 for frame and fork seems pretty good but I am always nervous about the cost of building something from the ground up. Also when I buy from my LBS I get free maintainence and some accountability if anything goes wrong with the bike. Hmmm. These bikes all look hot though,

Seconded. The best thing about the monocog is the fact that it's disc ready- no need to buy new wheels. Just select the brake of your choice, and bolt it up. Avid calipers can be had for cheap on the bay, though i've had some problems with corrosion and the manual pad adjustment.

If you can pony up for some hydraulic discs, i think they're superior for winter conditions.

I think that a prebuilt will always be cheaper than building from a frame set unless you have a lot of time to scour ebay and other websites for great deals.

This is my ride......a little diffrent that website as it uses a der. as the chain tensioner instead of eccentric BB. and it has a 3 piece cro-mo bmx crank.

The Monocog 29er is disc compatable, hubs and all. So, with a retail of less than $500, and BB7's running about $70, that's about $600 with some creative shopping.

I got my 'Cog right before thanksgiving and I can say nothing but awesome things about it. Climbs like a goat, rolls over anything, and puts a big, dumb grin on my face everytime I ride it. Oh, and as its disc compatable, fixed is only an $8 cog and a drill bit away

I have the Monocog. While it has the diskbrake caliper mounts, it's not really suitable for diskbrakes - it's nearly impossible to adjust the wheel so the rotor doesn't rub on the pads. The Zion is a much better solution if you want to go with diskbrakes.
