Hop-on and Ride Pedals?
 

i'm in the process of building up a pretty serious commuter bike (front and rear racks, maybe panniers, ect) and i've gotten to the pedals.
i was wondering if anyone has had good experiences riding fixed with platforms. something like the rivendell grip kings look really nice for riding in any type of shoe http://www.rivbike.com/images/produc...9/GKlength.jpg

or might just go clip and strap, but i wouldn't be totally satisfied with that.
any ideas?

I think gr-9's require clips and straps. And why cant clips and straps be hop on and go too. I think for a long commute, I'd defn be more comfortable with clips and straps. Maybe platforms would be ok for coffee runs/local errands.

riding fixed with platforms is fine provided you have a brake and some kind of grip between you and your pedals.

when it's nice and i'm just tooling around to and from class i often take off my clips and straps and just ride platforms (always with a front brake, just used more when i'm riding platforms). the only problem with my setup is that my mks sylvans have NO grip at all, and compared with bald-soled sneakers that i wear whenever it's wet out at all my feet slip off the pedals when i'm mashing. so yeah, when it's bad out i go clips and doubles.

the campy pedals i have on my bike right now only fit one specific pair of shoes. i want something that i can wear anything from boots to trainers w/o having to change anything on the bike

What's stopping the other shoes from working? I had the same problem on my Shimano 600s until I took off this one bit that was stopping my boots from getting on the pedal, and now I can ride with any footwear I desire. It may be that simple. Or I maybe totally wrong.

1664 makes the Beaver Trap which I have used in the past and it is a really nice pedal. They also make the Shaved Beaver which, as we all know is a little nicer.

You can ride with any type of basic pedals as long as you're running a brake.

They have a nice platform, but they're really small, and felt odd for my big feet. They also demand clips and straps, because they naturally hang upside-down, and it's frustrating to 'spin' them in to place with no obvious way to catch your toes.

Edit: I'm so used to clipless that perhaps I'm too biased. I tried, but I couldn't go back to clips and straps.

If you want 'stomp and go', maybe you're better off with double-sided touring pedals?

Yeah, GR-9s aren't meant to be used without clips and straps as far as I know. But with them they're great. +1 for touring pedals as normal flats. Those big BMX style pedals are really comfy but they're usually really wide and pedal strike is not anybody's friend.

Yeah the GR9s are pretty small, especially if you have a size 13.. I feel like there small and Im a 9. Def need clips to catch these when flipping up.. You could always go with mini clips/half clips, the ones without the straps?, on pedals of your choice, which would allow for a bit more clearance with the boots.

I love my docs, but the famous bouncing soles suck on the bike.

Some stiffer soled shoes might make you very happy.

As others have said above, power grips will do you right with any shoes or boots.

has anyone used the rivbike ones? i may be the guy that tries them, if not.

I've heard good things about Sun/Ringle Zu-Zu's, but I'm leaning toward picking up those MKS touring pedals.

Just to make this more useful: power grips are what you want. You can strap yourself in or not, without any negative effect if you dont. And why ride fixed if you don't have retention? I'd ride a freewheel before I did that.

while i don't advocate riding fixed with platforms usually, check out the animal hamilton sealed bmx pedal. replaceable pins, and you can install longer ones for more grip. totally badass pedals. they come in many colors.
