Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? I think i looked at the BB picture 3-4 times last night before i even realized that I wasn't looking at the stay's for the drop outs.
The colors are great too! I really hope your daughter enjoys her sweet new ride.
Thanks Metric! I let the painter choose the exact shade. I just gave him some ideas, like pink with polkadots and he ran with it. She'll be at Major Taylor all summer long...or at least when I go. She is so in love with her bike, its really cute.

1970's-80's Miyata Liberty that I just finished the conversion on. 'Tis my first attempt at creating a fixed gear. Used the cheapest parts I could find on HarrisCyclery.com. 42/15 gearing. It's enough to keep me at a decent speed. I'll probably drop it down to 14 eventually. Or get a bigger front chainring.

Still deciding whether I want to put bullhorns on or not. I'm going to give it a few weeks to see if I ever use the drop part. Therefore the bars aren't taped yet. Also waiting on the decision to figure out where to mount my brake lever/s.

Any suggestions for colors to paint the frame? I will probably rebuild the front wheel with a black hub, when funds become available.

Bullhorns are overrated. Classic road bars with non-aero levers are wayyyyyyyyyyy classier, and offer an increased number of hand positions.

Also, I wouldn't repaint that thing unless it's severely busted. Hard to tell from the photos, but it looks quite nice to me.

I wouldn't convert or switch to bullhorns either...

If you run brakes (which you clearly do) I always found 45 x 13 to be an ideal gearing...

It is in pretty good condition. A little rust on places where the paint had been rubbed off.

That's another reason I didn't tape them, not sure if I'm just going to slap some bmx style brake levers on the tops. Based on the little bit I have been able to ride it I think I'll be happy to have the drops when the head-wind picks up on my commute home.

You can get a used Park stand for ~$100 on eBay. Then there's this, which gets the job done for pretty cheap.

Hope a local shop is going under and then buy their stand. My first Park came when a shop went under ($75 w/ base). The second came from replying and buying a Park truing stand on CL ($150 for the repair stand w/ no base). My third and the cheapest portable Park came from a garage sale last summer for $20.

Thank you, it went together surprisingly well. Didn't even have to touch the chainline at all.

If you look at my picture, I used some 1/2" metal pipe, a 3'x3' sheet of 3/4" plywood, and a Pony pipe clamp kit to make a stand. cut some V's into two blocks of wood, put some plastic-handle dip on the cuts and epoxied them to the clamp's jaws. Works pretty well for ~$30-$40.
