Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

New poster, once in a while lurker. At home wimpering after having some wisdom teeth pulled out yesterday. No ride for me until tomorrow. So I thought I'd post some rides, and introduce myself.

Dave. I'm a RN in the ICU of the local hospital in Longmont, Colorado. Been here a while with my girlfriend, who is a librarian. Go figure. Discovered SS offroad about four years ago, and fixies for the first time about a year ago. Still have and ride geared road and mountain alot as well.

Prefer to be on a nice tight, twisty, technical trail, but am just happy most of the time to be out on a bike. Any bike. Enough blathering. Onto the rides.

Ionic Johnny Rotten EBB disc only SS (made by DEAN) Noleen 100mm air fork, Avid discs, Pau levers, WTB/Velocity disc wheels, fat tires, Titec ti stem, Airborne ti post, Azonic double wall bars. Some seat and pedals from chucksbikes.com, Action-Tec ti bb, FSA 180mm cranks, Salsa ring/King cog. 32x20 gearing. Love this thing. 23 pounds.

The road fixie. I *think* a 2002 Eros frame; Bianchi. Fixed via White Industries ENO rear hub. Generic carbon fork, Mavic something or other front wheel from E-bay. American CLassic ti post, unknown make ti stem, Nitto 'stache bars, Campy Mirage front brake, Modolo lever-from E-bay again. Ritchey road pedals, Ritchey road crank, Action-Tec ti BB. Performance house brand ti rail "junk saver' seat. Generic Performance tires. Fat double and triple wrap on the bars in places. Been out on some up to 50 mile rides on it so far. Wonderful!

Commuter, grocery getter, errand runner, once in a while trail riding funner. Surly Crosscheck frame, steel fork from Veloswap last year, as well as the Paul canti brakes. Sh#tmano Exage levers. Surly hubs/Mavic MA3 rims-converted to hollow axles, but using bolt on skewers; makes those flat times much easier, not having to carry a large wrench. Titec ti stem, Salsa 46cm Bell Lap bars. USE ti post-cut way down from it's parts bin state, after being bent on my MTB. Performance seat again. Action-Tec ti bb (again) with a Stronglight crankset, and generic double sided clipless pedals. Salsa ring, Surly cog, ACS freewheel. 38x16/20 fixed/free. Fenders and rack all come off/on with a minimum of fuss if I want to hit the trail without towing them around. Some nice and fat Tiog Bloodhound tires.

An old omega I picked up in Sydney for $250 with spare wheels.

3ttt stem (thanks to Jesse from Bike Bar), chorus headset, veloce bb, originally steel cinelli pista bars, but ride syntace stratos cause theyre the most fun.

Camp Pista cranks 165, 46-18, superbe hubs 28 spoke on black mav rims.

Tyres - vittoria, good for a month on the rear.

Turbo -white saddle picked up at a swap meet for a tenner! PORNO!

paint job ready for overhaul. life on the street is tough!

ciao!

Here's my new Single Speed. Picked the bike up off of ebay not too long ago for not too much money. Stripped it and put new tires on it. I have a bullhorn handlebar on the way. I need to take the rest of the gears off the the rear when I get the time. Oh yeah, it's the bike I commute with so forgive the basket.

Finally, here are pics of my converted fixie.

Specs:

• mid-80s Miele road bike
• 27" Araya rims laced to old Suzue hubs. Rear is redished and threaded with a 16T Surly cog and BB lockring
• Sugino VP cranks with a 48T Sugino BMX chainring
• Shimano M535 pedals
• OEM BB with JB Welded fixed cup as I stripped the threads a while back
• DIY bullhorns
• Tektro barend brake lever
• Shimano 600 front brake
• GTA stem
• Brooks B17 saddle

I stripped her down to bare steel and repainted her Chevrolet Orange using Duplicolor Engine Enamel paint with several coats of Duplicolor Clear Engine Enamel paint. Next time I'm going to powdercoat the damn thing. Too much invested time waiting for paint to dry while I could've been out riding. Oh well. You learn from your mistakes!

Yeah....that bike is hot. How much does a Circle A frame set one back?

Nice looking ride, too, progre-ss.

Here's my beloved bike -- a 1972 Schwinn Paramount road racer with chrome Nervex lugs set up as a fixed with new Phil Wood hubs laced to Mavic Open Pros. All other parts are vintage: Stem and bars are Cinelli road , campy headset, phil wood BB, campy 170 road cranks, campy seatpost. Brooks B17 saddle, conti grand prix 3000 tires, white cloth tape are new also. Decals are very unusual. I am not sure if they came with the bike or were added after a repaint, but they sure look cool.
