35 miles minimum. non stop, one way, single gear, no brakes, backpedalling, and 1/3 to 1/2 the ride going through hills of San Francisco and Marin. then i gotta ride back home, that's another 35 miles non-stop. that makes 70 miles with one break. for someone who hasn't ridden a bike in 6 years, 40lbs heavier, older, and only been back on a bike since June, i think i'm improving at a good pace. good enough reason for me to "try out" some zipps.

as for the "need" for Zipps, i don't need them. i got the $2300 set for $750 in almost new condition so i had to jump on the deal with extra cash i had laying around. then i'll make a little money selling my hed3 and corima because i got those wheels for cheap. and on and on. the cycle never ends, i buy for less and sell for more until i have enough for my TT/Tri bike by next summer.

i know i can get less costly wheels that may better serve my purpose, but naahhhhhhhhh!!!

thanks. last time i weighed it was with the hed/corima set up. it weighed in at 16.5 lbs. if i change the seatpost back to the dura-ace and lighter saddle i have, it will be 15.2. i haven't weighed the bike with the Zipp's yet, but the 404's are way lighter than the hed/corima.

If you want to actually train and go faster, gear down and spin more and run brakes. Or buy an actual road bike (not a time trial bike), and keep your RPMs over 90+ the whole time up and down the hills. You can be a "strong rider" all you want, but training with that kind of gearing is silly unless you're running on a 'drome the whole time.
I blast hills biweekly on my bike which is set up similarly. If I found zipps for that price I'd be all over them. My hill rides are only 24 miles but they absolutely make me a stronger rider. When I ride it 48x17 I'm less tired at the end but my average speed is consistently about .8mph slower than when I ride it at 48x15. I'd rather beef up my legs pushing a harder gear up than have my descent speeds limited by gearing. I hit 40 mph coming down and spinning that is a huge pain at 48x17. Then again I run a brake.

The back wheel doesn't go all the way into the track end, not enough clearance. Not a problem for me because I don't change my gearing, I can see how it would be annoying if you did though, because you would probably have to break the chain and add a half link or take one out.

Hrm, that is more than a design flaw...that is sketchy.
