Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? Whats the story with that bike? Is that his messing around bike? Seems to be fixed gear...or probably single speed. Two brakes.

edit: Oh i guess for the little race you just posted about.

Saturday:

First road bike, first conversion, first fixie. I love it. After i get paid tomorrow I'm getting a smaller chainwheel, a brake lever, and wrappin my bars. This is new to me so I would love some constructive criticism.

My other single speed (currently with a chain and brakeless):

The big German one. Can't remember the brand. Its a BMX chain. I don't like breaking a chain on a brakeless bike so I got the heaviest one I could find.

Oh, just once. Once, was enough. I was working, blasting down a hill, lane splitting. Went to skip stop, chain broke and I had to Fred Flintstone in between cars to come to a stop. It was a half link chain. Never buying one of those again!

The google machine tells me that chain is the Wipperman 1G8, weighing in at 567grams! That's two times as heavy as a normal chain. It looks cool but it seems excessive, considering it's for chain grinds on BMX bikes.

I agree with the TR-Jammer on the go beefy.

I live in San Fran. I had a Sturmey Archer chain brake while standing up going up a hill in low gear. For those who don't know, when this happens, you go down on the bar. Its the same thing that happens when a chain brakes and you are going up hill. Not fun. *massages the family jewels.

Also, I've gone over the top of my handlebar going down hill and emergency-braking with just the front brake - the only brake I had on the bike.

Bottom line: I have two brakes and a strong chain! Heh...
