Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

I got bored the other day so I went and took these. Nothing new on the bike besides less tread on the rando.

so i've been talking about how much this thing is ghetto and i couldn't build it up right and it doesn't fit me...

well... it does fit me.

i fixed the ridiculous brake lever location, which was getting hate galore. so stop hating on my newest 'weather' bike, start hating on my shirt:

you might as well lock up one of you wheels too, my guess is the front since it is more flashy

It's all about context, and I think the checkered veep looks good on a utilitarian, simple Steamroller. I doubt I'd like it as much on a flashier frame.

Yeah, I do usually. Sometimes I have a krypto chain and the mini locking up both wheels. But I was just locking up to pick up some dinner.

Does it handle corners like the Lightcycle in Tron?

that's a lovely looking conversion

the bars are low because the cable is too short on the front to have the brakes like that. i'll get a longer cable and then they'll come up.

Sorry to keep this one going, but this bike is totally awesome.. What are the components? Frame, hubs wheels, tires, cranks, bars, chain. Is it fixed? I think you've done something amazing that a lot of us want to recreate.

Btw I sold the IRO because this does the utilitarian thing a little better. I'll be adding more and changing bars later

they mean "put the gears and derailleur back on"

what's the point in converting a roadbike to a singlespeed anyway (particularly a roadie with nice/quality components)? I understand a fixed conversion, but why not just keep it in one gear when riding?

Who cares? It looks good, and probably rides good.

Much less maintenance.

He said he has a few other bikes, maybe he just wanted a single speed.

Read his post, he sounds like he knows what's up.

rides just the same as with the gears. it's a singlespeed, not fixed.

maintenance isnt that big of a deal. I think if you're riding a vintage colagno you can probably adjust a derailleur. I think maintaining chain tension on a derailleur-less bike would be about the same amount of hassle.

I guess it's just a preference I dont get.
