thoughts on Tommaso Augusta?

http://www.rscycle.com/site/image_browser/track_lg.jpg

Anyone have any knowledge/thoughs/opinions/etc. on the http://www.rscycle.com/s.nl/it.A/id.21400/.f? After riding several Tommasos in the late 80s, (in all of their flourescent paint-fade glory) it kind of pains me to see this, but at the same time, it looks intriguing.

crappy marketing bs about "the soul of the street" aside, the Geometry seems promising and the parts spec doesn't look all that bad. I've been thinking of picking up a budget bike to pass the time while I'm working on piecing some of my other bikes together, but none of the BD bikes really strike any chord for me.

I searched for a while and couldn't really find much. Any knowledge/thoughts? (and if this has already been covered, than I apologize and would love a link)

i posted a link to it in the kilo tt thread. i have a feeling this will be the new kilo tt, based on supply.

A couple of notes.

The photo shows ergo road drops and the description says it comes with a flat bar.
That front hub looks somewhat chintsy, and unfortunately it doesn't really show the rear up close. Something tells me these are kind of crappy hubs, and the Weinmann rims aren't exactly amazing either.
Frame seems decent enough. Double butted cromo.
22lbs isn't exactly a lightweight, but there are a lot of no name parts hanging on it.

Probably worth $400. The $999 MSRP has got to be bull**** though.

Looks pretty meh. Yet another ~$500 tarck bike.

peabodypride 12-11-07 02:19 PM

zomg it's ideal for Axel Rose!

edit: seconded about "just another <$500 tarack bike." Now with DPs, which is nice I guess.

is anyone else getting the optical illusion that the drop on the left handle bar is closer than the headtube? i really can't stop staring at it.

ryand 12-11-07 03:38 PM

You're luck somebody posted this Beyonce featuring Mad Cobra video.

peabodypride 12-11-07 03:42 PM

Except that the TT has cool looking geometry.
But at least its cheap at $399 http://www.rscycle.com/s.nl/it.A/id....FRIUagodi0KH7Q

i don't get why, if that bike had a drop or even 0 degree rise stem, people would be like OMG SADDLE IS SOOO HIGH YOUR BIKE IS TOO SMALL, but for some reason, companies take a too-small bike, put a silly stem setup on it, and people don't say anything.

evictionsurplus 12-11-07 09:23 PM

That is good. It is rather M.C. Escher style. "Relativity" with drop bars...

It's called a threadless stem, and most current track bikes have them.

willypilgrim 12-11-07 09:35 PM

Yeah, and somehow being a threadless stem means it has to be a ridiculous rise.

TheDLake 12-12-07 10:47 AM

So no one has ridden this bike yet? hrmmmmm.... I can't wait to see if this is going to be crap or not. I'm guessing the frame if anything will be solid.

calam63 12-12-07 12:33 PM

someone get it - and tell us how it is

i can't imagine it will be significantly different from any other budget fixed gear out these days..

ryanlovesyou 12-12-07 02:19 PM

Except its $400... which is cheaper than everything else except the Kilo.

EDIT- and it comes in all black.

vuduchyld 12-12-07 02:25 PM

$400 and all black!

I'm actually surprised nobody has bought one and posted about it.

I considered buying one, but I went with the sub-$200 conversion. This was on my list with the Mercier, Motobecane Messenger, and Windsor.

ebawho 12-12-07 02:29 PM

i ordered a tommaso bike from rscycles once, one of the cheapo geared ones a while back, the real tommaso is dead and rscycles has taken them over to my understanding. the paint and everything was really well done, and for the incredibly low price, it rides great.

and this is kind of unrelated, but by reusable foam padded bike box, it really is AMAZINGLY packed. i mean really well packed, everything is padded between layers of foam. this thing could fall out of an airplane and be fine. NOTHING like when i ordered a surly steamroller from jenson usa and it came with a little bit of foam around the tubes thrown in a cardboard box (and dented.)

Because no one cares how a bike that is not ridden is set up for a photo shoot.
