What do you do at traffic lights?

Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

well my friend helped me put it together and said this would be a good gearing for our area. I think there was miscommunication in that he thought I wanted a purely commuter bike, rather than a fixed gear that could enable skid-stops and stuff.

i was gonna switch to a 18T cog, but.....i need a bike to do it...

I slowly canter to a static endo, weeping, I use the time up quietly singing prayers to Lord David of Christ, other times I listen to prog-rock on my video phone, still other times I blow hot gas out of my ears.

this thread needs a bump!!:

i trap small animals with my oversize messenger bag, or pick up roadkill along the way. then, at lights, i skin and tan their hides and make myself a new fur loinclothe. this new loinclothe is affixed to my previously naked body while riding to the next light.

i blow lights whenever possible but i know cops are dicks in some towns. traffic lights are tricked by induction, not weight, so if you really want a light to change you can get a rare earth magnet and tape it to the bottom of your bike. they are the size of a quarter and cost a dollar.

I'm not sure what a footstand is. What I do depends somewhat on what bike I'm riding. If it's a bike with clips, I'll likely trackstand. Just platforms, I'm more likely to put a foot down, unless it's my cruiser, then I'll put both feet down. Sometimes I'll coast up to the light and hope it changes before I do any of the above.

There's a buncha other stuff I might do, like take a drink, put jacket on or take it off, blow my nose, check out the babes, gigidee gigidee.

If it's a quick light and/or there aren't a lot of cars/other bikes around, I'll just slow down and wait for it to change. If it's going to take a while, I either footstand or preferably put a foot down on the curb or grab hold of a street sign or parking meter. If I could trackstand, I would.

You know those horse poo bags that hang off the back ends of carriage horses in some downtowns? I have one of those hanging off the back of my saddle. I try to use it everytime I stop.

Normally I expect to do a footstand. If the light is red way in advance of my arrival to the intersection , i slow to a crawl to avoid stopping .. On rare occasions when I don't feel like stopping, I do a quick stop. Make a right turn go a couple hundred feet and do a U turn. Usually only when I know the light is ridiculously long in duration... One example. I can think of one intersection with a red light. Immediately after the light there is a steep climb. On the sole occasion I hate to stop.. Because it causes loss of momentum.
