weinmann dp18 vs Velocity deep v

So i plan on starting a new project bike, and was trying to figure out what wheels to get. Both sets of wheels have same spokes, nipples, and formula hubs. the weinmann's run for about 140$ for the set, and the deep v's go for about 220$ for a set. The wheels looks very similar from what i can tell, just wondering if anyone knows how they compare, if its worth the extra money or what?

i asked my lbs the same question a few weeks ago - i was told that i would 'notice a difference' and that the velocity's were just a higher quality wheel with a better ride.

after receiving a shipment of both the DP's and V's the V's are def a much higher quality.
The DP's are fine, the roll, people like them because they look like V's but are cheeper.

and every one that see's your bike will think they look like V's, but once someone with V's rolls up your street , your DP's don't look like V's anymore.

i think i have to cite Kat Williams on the above line

Those are not cheap.

The velocity deep v's are heavy but strong rims - i've seen wheels barely (< 1mm) out of true with a broken spoke.

I vote for deep v's. If you get tempted by colors, choose wisely.

They are a little heavier, and they are strong as an ox. strong like wood. strong like an iron egg.

don't cheap out on your wheels. the deep v's will stay true. consider fusions, too.

yeah i roll on dp-18s. they're a fine wheel. if you really want velocitys, then you'd buy velocitys. they are just a pretty strong deep section wheel

yeah, fusions are good times without the extra weight. i hop curbs pretty regularly and don't worry about them. plus silver deep section rims look the best, along with white which is unfortunately now a complete fixed gear cliche.

i like the old cxp14s or shamals myself, but in reality the deep section rims by weinmann, alex et al are reasonable wheels but not the same quality as velocity.

then again, it depends on the 'real' reason you want a deep-section rim; fashion v. strength v. perceived aero advantage.

strength is the main reason i want the deep v's, i dont think the lil extra weight will bother me. then after strength its next for "fashion"

There is zero aero advantage when you're riding with 30mm max section of the deep v's. You could sit up for half a second and lose all the advantage over a regular tri TT length course.

In terms of strength the open pros < alex da 28 < velocity deep v. I don't know why everyone keeps recommending the open pros, they aren't anything special at all. A velocity aerohead will easily destroy the open pros.

Assuming all hand built of course.

If you want lighter but still retaining aero section, then try IRD niobium rims. Same 30mm section as deep v but considerably lighter.

yeah open pros don't really seem like they'd be near as durable as deep v's and to just be flashy, the cost of open pros vs. deep v's is alot less than most people seem to think.

if you don't care so much about style you could look in sun cr18's. they are a box section style wheel, my buddy is beating a set to death and they are hanging in amazing and they are quite a bit cheaper than deep v's.

niobium 30s are quite underappreciated, possibly because they only come in machined and black or silver. also, i did say "perceived" regarding the negligible benefits of a 30mm section rim over a box rim.

I cannot conceive of how you think Open Pros are flashy. They're simple, strong, traditional box-rims, they don't come in a variety of colors, and without stickers, only the nerdiest bike nerds would recognize them. Also, they save a lot of weight over Deep V's for comparable strength and a lower price.

I don't think he's saying OPs are flashy, rather that the additional cost of Vs over OPs is acceptable if that's what you're into.
