Dude. When someone says to give your stuff up, you give your stuff up. Especially when that someone is 8 dudes with weapons. No point in getting killed over a bike and a bag. Sucks about your novel though.
I'd commend you but this was a really horrible idea.

quite honestly, if i was in that situation, i'd have offered my wallet pretty immediately, hoping to save my novel or bike.
in high school, when nyc was a little grimier, i'd always carry ten bucks of mugger money in my pocket. never had to use it, but if someone says "give me your cash," you just hand them that, and be done with the ordeal.
anyway, sorry you almost got stabbed. sorry you got jumped. here's hoping you recover what/how you need to recover.

Damn! It's sounds like you held your own pretty well there... Having been in situations like that myself (although never 8 people, more like 3), your sences and state of awareness become supernatural and your flight or fight reflex kicks in... from there on the monkey part of my brain takes over. Anyways, glad your okay and live to tell the tell.. Be safe.

Please tell me that isn't the sarcasm wink. I've had a friend catch a bullet because a group of guys couldn't take him in a fight and one of them happened to have a gun on them.

sad part is.. the house hold i live in as meeting hub for students for a democratic society and lancaster peace and justice collition and food and bombs.. and pretty much everyone myself included is trying to move progressive though forward.. it's a shame there are so many people who carry the ugly thug mentality.. i was writing some love poems to the lancaster sky lines.. i just hope one of them read my stuff and maybe felt bad and may change their path in life.. sigh.. anyway thanks for the kind words everyone.. please be safe out there.. cars.. vans.. busses.. gang-stars.. it's a dangerous but beautiful time

Am I the only one who finds it funny that a guy who is trying to write a novel absolutely fails at punctuation and general story telling?

miles - they say that a conservative is a liberal who's been mugged. i think that's really snarky and obnoxious, and don't fall into that trap. there's arseholes all across the spectrum of human experience. don't let that change your motivations for working toward justice. fists up.

Yeah, we always carried our money in our socks. So if you got robbed you could empty your pockets and play like you were poor.

Glad to hear you are alright. I hope the biggest lesson you take away from this is to always be aware of your surroundings, which means don't walk and talk on your cell phone.

man! insane story!! glad you came out OK. I've been working on a novel as well, i would be devastated if i lost all that work! I guess that's why I have 3 copies of it between 2 machines and 1 external drive.
sounds like you help your own pretty damn well! in a situation like that, it's hard to think, you just react. given the circumstances i would say you did alright. i can't believe the bondsman with a gun wouldn't help you. what a tool!

Every situation is different...Sometimes, you can give up what you have and still have to fight anyway. Rare, but it happens...happened to me.

Very sorry to hear about that happening to you. Unfortunately, it appears that one may take all of the necessary precautions and still end up in a poor situation. That's not to say that taking those steps is pointless. Ultimately, it is simply a part of life. Bad things happen and it's a drag.
Example...a friend of mine was riding and noticed a van make a u turn and start following him. He starts to ride faster and get away but they simply accelerate and cut him off. He came out of it physically fine but lost some of his stuff.

Glad you're doing okay. Being on the phone dropped your awareness level down. Sometimes people will still take you out even if you give up the goods. Pepper spray might've helped, but then again, might have backfired.

For what it's worth: thugs get encouraged if you don't fight back - that's the thug mentality. If you show no fear, they will back off. Proof: the guy kept his bike and mobile phone in the end. Had he not fought back, they would have taken all he had and beaten him up - what do you think, these psychopats ENJOY inflicting pain on people.
To badevilcow: I commend your courageous behavior! And I POOP on all those that didn't stop to help you!

I have never been mugged. I do not want to be mugged. If I was mugged, I'd let them take my stuff, most likely.
That said, well done with the fisticuffs. You're apparently a pretty dangerous dude, and at least some of the guys got a few bruises to go with their new messenger bag. I'm also really glad you didn't get hurt very badly, my friend.
Were you in philly, by the way? You mentioned Lancaster and food not bombs...
