the latest pelican album is pretty good, and if you're into experimental metal check out kayo dot.
also probably trust mihlbach over me on fantasy metal, my knowledge of fantasy is basic at best.

humancongereel 12-20-07 11:00 PM

oh, duh, carcass.

also, dying fetus.

and kayo dot is waaaaaay experimental.

chase. 12-20-07 11:05 PM

i like the second pelican the best. you might like isis, and city of caterpillar. on the same page as pelican is russian circles, but they're stylistically more like jazz musicians playing metal— but i think it's great.

Zombie Carl 12-20-07 11:09 PM

Wow, worst band names ever.

andrewssohip 12-20-07 11:21 PM

oh yeah! city of caterpillar/pg99 are both ill but that's getting kind of far from metal.

and yeah kayo dot is super experimental and it definitely took me a few months to really get into them.

BRANDUNE 12-20-07 11:24 PM

no so sho. When forever comes crashing was converge at their peak.

nateintokyo 12-21-07 03:23 AM

lately my metallic urges have tended toward:

sunn 0))) (not quite metal?)
neurosis (esp. 'word as law')(not quite metal?!)
voivod
pentagram
trouble
candlemass
hammers of misfortune (I love love love 'the bas-tard' but 'locust years', not so much)

....as for converge, I'm good until 'forever comes crashing' too.
I will always love Iron Maiden. high on fire, khanate, goatsnake, cult of luna, etc, are also fun stuff. but I have been more of an old-er school simple-sounds trip lately.

yep.

add some slayer, some today is the day, some arch enemy, some in flames, and some haunted, and you've got a good start!

DYSTOPIA = Doom-ridden, metal-laced, down-tuned punk with a "Love Earth-Hate People" Philosophy
http://www.myspace.com/dystopia
I'm so ****ing exited that they are finally putting something else out. Hands that mold and backstabber are the only two songs on their myspace that I can vouch for at this point.

If you can find the 'Man Is The b a s t a r d' Mumia cd it is ****ing classic.

Acrid were just a group of hardcore kids, and one girl; alexandra lamoureux- bass; who forsake the positive messaging and punk themed anthemic songwriting of traditional hardcore to deliver extremely distorted, sludgy, sick, grinding metal. no other hardcore group ever came close to the destruction that acrid laid to wax. no sing alongs, no breakdowns, no poppy interludes, just scathing, scary metal, and vocals delivered straight from hell. high, low, distorted, strangled as ****, glass in the larynx vocals of neil rodman.
http://www.myspace.com/poisonfreepowerviolence

So, not really metal per se. What can I say, I like the crusty ****.
