How do you heal?

I pulled my right calf muscle last night. I inexplicably got a cramp after a short, easy ride. So I try to stretch it out and it wouldn't let go at all until finally it just snapped. I mean, it didn't really snap, but it felt like the cramp snapped out somehow. Anyway, it was sore and hard to walk on the rest of the night, and kept mini-cramping while sitting, standing and riding back home. Then, it cramped another 4 or 5 times during the night and it's still suuuuuper sore today and is still doing the mini cramp thing. I don't think I'm going to ride at all today, even though I really want to. I'm afraid of doing something really bad to it. What do yall mahfuggers do?

I hydrate well, stretch (after my muscles are warm) if need be, eat some bananas or something, and if its still a problem soak in hot bath with Epsom salt to end the day. Been doing this since high school and its always worked for me, and Im in bad shape with all the accidents Ive been in.

Do you have any idea why your calf hurts, is your seat too high?

I'm impervious.

does that mean no riding tonight?
your body is probaly still in need of hydration after you illness.

I have learned that the best thing is heat and then ice. Also make sure to stretch it out as often as possible, not until it hurts just enough to keep it moving. Don't try to hammer when you first get on the bike, especially when it is cold out. Not sure if it is cold where you live but give you body a chance to get some blood flow to you legs before you try and pass a commuter.

Yes. More water down the gullet, mate.

sodium helps with muscle cramps, so gatorade is a good choice. salt water if you're a man.

make sure you keep up on the vitamins and minerals, sodium and potassium are the usual suspects for craps, so eat a banana and wash it down with salt water

Saddle is fine. I was really sick last weekend, and the day before yesterday I took my first long ride since being sick. Lot of climb on that ride too. I reckon that has something to do with it. And it has been fairly cold here lately. High 20s last night, low 20s tonight. The only other thing different from the norm is I started wearing nicotine patches yesterday... trying to quit. I also have really cut down my coffee consumption to help quitting smoking, but I think that should be a good thing as far as hydration goes. Probably just pushed it too hard Thursday after being ill.

Sigh. I hate not riding. When do you go to Mexico? You think my leg would be alright if I didn't go up the hill or do anything hard tonight?

Ive always worked through soreness. Throughout the day I would stretch whenever I could, as long as my muscles were moderately warm, then have a few bananas and water/gatorade like everyone else said. Id still go out, you should know whats within your limits.

drink a protein shake within 30mins after a long ride, this will reduce the soreness that you feel later.
