Stupid question perhaps... But still

Usually when I read advice about what gearing to use when riding fixed or SS, itīs usually recommended to use a higher gear in the summer and a bit lower in the winter...
Are we talking stronger winds in the winter or the cold weather making the wheel harder to turn?

Anyone know?

for me its **** ****ing tires on **** ****ing roads

roadfix 12-23-07 05:50 PM

excellent!

bward1028 12-23-07 06:03 PM

high cadences to keep you warmer.

teiaperigosa 12-23-07 07:57 PM

more control for slippery roads

my reason,
studed tires get more resistance, and riding in the snow is hard

Cold weather just makes you slower for many reasons (denser air, more clothes, poor road conditions, etc). In such suboptimal conditions, the last thing I am worried about is setting personal records. There's no sense in mashing everywhere, so gearing down in winter can be beneficial.

i like it cause its easier to skid, people for some reason dont know how to drive in winter weather so you get alot of people spinning out in front of you, etc.

plus its easier to go slower over patches of ice, and maintain control. Im going to look into studding my tires this season though

cause it's hard as **** to ride through 6" of powder for 7 miles.
