Freakin' Endplugs

keep

falling

out.

Is this a symptom of my inability to properly apply bar tape, or am I just cursed? Is there a cure?

go to your LBS and ask for a pair of buzz kill plugs. They come with every bicycle equipped with drop bars so they should have a nice pile sitting around.

When you wrap the bars, overlap the tape over the ends of the bars like a 1/2 inch. When you're done taping you should tuck the extra tape in under the plugs, to keep them snug.

I've used the Velox plugs before, but they're big clunky rubber doorstoppers, and once I figured out the right way to use the plastic plugs that came with my bar tape I've found the Velox plugs to be overkill. The little plastic OEM plugs are much cleaner looking. I use Fizik tape though, maybe the plugs they use are sized better to fit the bars.

just learn to tape your bars, the first couple times i wrapped my bars the ends plugs came out. then i watched the guy at my LBS wrap a couple sets. after rewrapping my bars the proper way, the end plugs never fall out.

Wrapping bars and jamming the extra ends into the bar is for amateurs, no matter how many pros do it. The variety of bar wall thicknesses these days ultimately calls for different sized barplugs. Sort of sucks, but you'll be happiest in the long run if you wrap the bottoms of the bars without jamming the tape in the end of the bar, and searching around for the right sized plugs at your shop. Different brands fit different bars.

I've got wine corks in my bars right now because I'm cheap and I had them sitting around because I'm a drunk.

I've wrapped literally hundreds, if not thousands of bars in my life, and I never once encountered a bar where the wall thickness impeded the taping and the OEM plugs. At most, the variance between bar thickness is a fraction of a millimeter.

Also, I'm not sure how something can be "for amateurs" if mechanics and pro cyclists do it.

I think his point was that you can get bar plugs that will stay in without tucking in the excess wrap. I have a couple of sets of bar plugs that fit snugly in my bars but most of them need the extra wrap.

I've had bars wrapped both ways and it really doesn't make any difference to me. If the plugs fit without the extra wrap then I won't leave any extra, otherwise I will.

some press-in plastic plugs have sturdier prongs than others; the deda ones with the faux carbon weave and the fizik ones are much better than the new black cinellis. it's almost enough to make me want to machine some endplugs from aluminum.

I like the chromed metal ones I got from my LBS. They also sell them at Home Depot as "bolt hole covers" or something. I don't know if they'll work with puffy cork wrap though.

Wrap around the prongs on your plastic plugs with a little electrical tape.

I dont have too many problems as long as i avoid the following two things

I dont have enough bartape tucked in.
I fall and dont check to see if theyre still there, if not findable on the ground.

I'm pretty sure those MASH barplugs so on the end of risers with a set screw. What, did you think a MASH-endorsed product went on drops?

$18 barplugs go nowhere, but I'll pick them out of the dollar bin in a year or so.
