Hub question re serrated washers

Yes I searched.

I broke the serrated washer/spacer on my fixed hub this morning on the way to work. It broke while tightening the axle bolts after changing a flat. The washer sits on the inside of the dropouts next to a bearing spacer.

This is the freewheel side of the hub with the current spacer intact. The washer I broke is sitting to the left of the axle nut:

This is the fixed side of the hub with the broken spacer/washer missing:

This is the broken spacer/washer:

The hub is a velocity/formula fixed/free. It has standard threading. Are these spacer/washers replacable or able to be bought as a seperate item or do I need a new hub?

They're definitely replaceable. Otherwise there would be riots. Here are some, for example. I've had a couple of those snap already just like that on my Surly hubs. Great hubs, but you've got to watch those nuts. What happens is that sometimes when you're taking the wheel on and off and loosening and tightening the nuts, the inner locknut may unscrew a bit, so that it doesn't seat against the hub. When you put the wheel back into the frame and tighten the nuts down, the inner one snaps.

Go to a bike shop and ask them to get you a few replacements.

It might benefit you to ease up on the axle nut torque a little. If you have problems with wheel slippage you can always get a tensioner. I broke two serrated washers and an axle nut on my Surly hub before getting a tensioner, and have broken nothing since.
