Safe to cutoff the rear brake mount section that spans the top stays?

Is it safe to cut off the rear brake mount bar that goes across the top stays. I'm trying to avoid having to custom order hard to find 24" inch wheels for this junior 10 speed frame. The front wheel fits perfect, will I cause severe structural damage if I cut off the rear cross bar mount section to accomadate the 26" wheel??

I don't think that's a good idea, but hey, it's your bike do whatever.

probably, but you never know until you try it. it could last forever, or it could sent you into the pavement.

It sounds like this is a project that won't be ridden daily.

I wouldn't ride it everyday, but if I was tossing a bike together for the fun of it I'd do it for sure.

my vote says no.

because the frame with twist laterally. causing the chain to come off.

I could be wrong, but that is my vote

The brake bridge does serve a purpose aside from holding a brake...why else would track bikes, bikes with disk brakes, and bikes with canti brakes have one?

Click on "wheels"

Center row, third from top.

$78 for the set is a lot less than an ambulance ride.

Here's a general tip: if you don't even know what it's called, don't cut it off.

There's this magical place called a bike shop where you can order all kinds of crazy things. Try there.

someone on here did a finite element analysis / structural test of a theoretical road frame with and without a bridge. i believe the conclusion was that it didn't matter much as long as the rear axle was solidly bolted in.
