Singlespeed & Fixed Gear "I still feel that variable gears are only for people over forty-five. Isn't it better to triumph by the strength of your muscles than by the artifice of a derailer? We are getting soft...As for me, give me a fixed gear!"-- Henri Desgrange (31 January 1865 - 16 August 1940)

As mentioned and practced by Straws (and myself) there is nothing stoping someone from riding "brakeless" even with a brake on the front wheel. Just don't use it unless you need it. I don't understand how someone can argue that brakelss is anything but an aesthetic choice (on the street, of course)?

like this:

Its a zen thing. Somehow I feel more connected to my bike. I don't need anything complicating my ride -- I just want pure, unadulterated bicycle. Its almost spiritual.

let me summarize this thread:

riders with brake(s): just put a damn brake on your bike, it will be safer.

riders without brake: who knows if you'll be safer, you might be ******** and can't operate it. why have a brake if you can't operate it? blah blah blah, i'm wrong.

riding brakeless doesnt effect only you. last year 3 or 4 times i remember some kid riding brakeless couldn't stop fast enough to yield at intersections and almost either clipped me or some pedestrians.

you can do what you want and ride brakeless, but like smoking indoors there are other people that are affected here. Not to sound like a dbag but let's not forget that fedex guy is probably drinking himself to sleep because of the guilt of being involved in the death of a kid

With all the BS 2 cents everyone is throwing in, I'm gonna buy a fixed road bike with 4 brakes, anchor, tractor beam, and then I'm going to use the collective brakeless zen of this board to ensure that I always stop 30 feet earlier than I need.

not to mention you can allow yourself to go faster with a brake, having the subconscious certainty of being able to stop quicker if you get yourself into trouble. - almost every messenger i've spoken to about the matter admits that they find themselves hustling harder with a brake on. the majority of brakeless riders in the city either cruise or ride at a snail's pace for a reason; i rarely see any really booking it during a work day.

I wouldn't think so, since unless he ran into the kid(which isn't the case it seems since his bike was undamaged), then he's not at fault. If i was driving and some kid on a bike plowed into the side of my car and flew off his bike and died, i'd be pissed at him for ****ing up my door, not feeling guilty for him getting himself killed.

I value the weight savings over my life. In fact, this thread has got me thinking about getting killed by a FedEx truck so the bike would be even lighter without me on it.

i guess it's hard to say since it's hypothetical, but i mean come on, drinking yourself to sleep because your broken up over someone elses stupid actions?

If you're gonna act like that, might as well be that broken up about everything else that goes on in the world. Theres a lot sadder stuff in the world.

i guess it'll do, though it is so big and well-hydrated that you may need to get some fenders.

I saw a guy stabbed to death at a party I was helping throw a few years back, and that **** really upset me for a long time. I always thought I was a callus person, but watching someone die really really sucks.

WHAT? Your thread about the unfairness of being warned not to ride in hallways at work was a piece of crap. You have no room to speak here or complain.
