Suggestions on build
Have had this bike in my head for awhile. It's not technically a fg/ss but I think it's closer to that than anything else. What I'm really doing is trying to create a very modern version of the old 3 speed club bicycles. Anyway, light weight is a big factor. I don't mind spending more for a decent drop in weight, but I'm not at the spend $1,000 to save 10 grams phase yet. Right now I'm sitting at about 13.5 lbs and I think the only thing I haven't counted is the chainring bolts. Any suggestions? I'm really torn on the frame, but I haven't found anything that weighs less for anywhere near that price, and I'd be willing to spend up to $1,000 for a bling frame that was significantly lighter.
I hope the formatting comes out right. Prices are what I found around the net, weights I investigated best I could. Wt. It's a bit spendy, but it's light. via Geekologie: http://www.geekologie.com/2008/01/wo...bike_frame.php
http://www.geekologie.com/2008/01/09/bikeframe.jpg The Delta 7 Sports Arantix Mountain Bike features an IsoTruss carbon fiber frame. What the hell is that you ask? Well it's a frame made of hand-woven carbon fiber strands that are then wrapped in Kevlar and baked. Each one has over 1,672 feet of carbon fiber and takes over 300 hours to build. The resulting pyramidal structure of the frame makes it not only rugged but light -- a measly 2.75 pounds. |

A 3-speed hub on a leader bike, I love it. I think internal gear hubs are wicked, my winter bike has been awesome with one. one consideration is Strumey hubs are marginally lighter, And can be had with out a coaster brake, personally i think a coaster brake leader bike a bit silly, but its your build do what you like, lastly i like to avoid shimano if i can

As for the coaster, It's my attempt to keep things as simple as possible. With the coaster there's no cable, no lever, and it's already part of the hub, simple as can be. I may or may not run a front brake, probably will, since I'm a pilot and we like our back-ups. |
Might wanna add in the mass of the grease you'll use to install all of the parts ;)
Sounds like a nice build, good luck! |
