Anyone use a Surly Fixxer?

I want to convert my cassette wheel using the Surly Fixxer. Has anyone here tried it? Any problems developing play with the splines?

There are no pawls in the Fixxer. It replaces your cassette entirely with a fixed body that goes on the splines on the hub. Go to http://www.surlybikes.com/parts.html and click on Fixxer and you'll see a photo of it.

While I have no personal experiance with one, I've heard stories of them developing a little play.

You're right - I should have said spline.

I heard the Miche cog carrier system develops play, so my concern was the Fixxer would also, using a similar splined design.

I used one for about year until the bike was stolen. After the first ride I noticed it had a tiny bit of play, tighten it with a touch of blue loctite and never had a problem again. The cog and lockring threaded on very smoothly and never had any cog movement. It's too bad they now cost so much, as I feel that they are an excellent way to easily convert a bike to fixed gear if you don't build wheels, or have an excellent wheel already built that you want to use. They also make it super easy to get a straight chainline. I would have bought another one except for the fact my lbs gave me a super sweet price on a complete wheel build (thanks Shapelike).

I used it for around 8 mo. on a 12 year old wheel. I never had any problems with developing play.

I've been really interesting in getting one for my old MTB which I run as SS now but the damn Fixxer is just too expensive IMO.
