Decent 1 inch threadless stem?
These things seem like such rarities can I get some suggestions. Anyone have any experience with the nitto ultimate ideal stems that ben's cycles has (sans cheesy paintjobs)? I know about shims with the 1 1/8 stems but would rather just have 1 inch.
Thanks |
thomson x2 with the one inch adapter as seen on this bikehttp://farm2.static.flickr.com/1192/...34ffd0.jpg?v=0

The camera angle? From here it looks like nothing is wrong with that bike.

Looks like the front tire overlaps the frame. Guess I'm just crazy.

nice 1" threadless stems are few and far between. if you're running 1" threadless, i'd recommend getting a 1" -> 1 1/8" shim (i know a few who run these with absolutely 0 issue), which opens up a ton of doors:

Nashbar has a 1" Ritchy WCS threadless for $30. The only catch is that it is 130mm. If you can use a long stem & insist on an actual 1' threadless stem it might me an option.
Otherwise just use a 1 1/8" stem with the shim. Yhey usually come with the stem, but if not most shops usually have a box full if you ask nicely. |
Cinelli Alter
Cinelli Grammo (ti) used/NOS Salsa old school MTB stem (Ringle, Control Tech, etc...) if you're running 25.4 bars |
I'm a fan of the salsa stems, you can remove the decals, and they look pretty snazzy. There's always thomson if you want something burly as hell.
|
Just shim it. Once you put the top cap on you'll forgot the shim is there. It doesn't effect performance or aesthetics in any way.

The only decent 1" stems I ever used where the Salsa 1" threadless stems and ITM Eclypses (both came in 1" and quill forms). Nice and stiff and minimal designs. Only downside (for some) is the lack of a removable face plate.
However, you may find it easier to shim a 1 1/8" stem. Some really don't look too bad shimmed. |

The problem with the nitto ones is that they don't have the removable faceplate. And once you've had a few bikes with those going back is really really hard. Everything's just so civilized and easy - it's seductive. |
i was also thinking salsa. they make a good stuff.

Does anyone have a pic of that nitto ultimate ideal mounted on a bike?
I just wanna see if the 60deg drop looks completely silly. |

Anything canecreek, I don't think they even list mine of their web site, its awesome, I repacked/cleaned the bearings(it's not cartridge) and now its smoother than when it was new. Personally i' have now prefer loose(well its got retainers) ball headsets over, Cartridge. Cartridges are just not as smooth. Plus my headset cant cost much more than a new set of cartridge bearings for a high end headset.
(its IS-19 or some such) |

(its IS-19 or some such) The subject is stems, not headsets. |
