ugly bike

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...c/CIMG0933.jpg

Here is my ugly, dumb, trashy bike. If it was fixed gear I'd submit it to the gallery so you guys could tell me what a jackass I am. It started out as a 1988 14 speed red/pink/cream specialized sirrus. Now its a 1988 single speed el chupacabra with a green frame and blue/glow in the dark forks. The top tube pad was made out of electrical tape and some packing foam that my other bike was shipped with. This bike sucks in several ways but I still love it.

Anyone else sporting a bike as trashy as this one?

edit: It also uses the long chainring bolts with the nuts turned backwards to keep the chainring from rattling around.

Looks like a decent bike.

Yup, I'll post a link when I am off this conf. call. ;)

bja86 01-23-08 01:34 PM

i think it looks nice aswell

shasta 01-23-08 01:37 PM

Wow guys. Now I just feel bad for calling it ugly. I think I may be like an emotionally abusive husband to this bike.

Yeah! Apart from the top tube protector, the bike is really nice, IMHO. I really dig that emerald green.

jet sanchEz 01-23-08 02:04 PM

A Specialized Sirrus is way way way way better than half of the bikes posted in the stickied Fixed/SS photo thread. Roll though that thread and then the Jackass of the Day thread and you will realize that this bike is far from ugly.

shasta 01-23-08 02:10 PM

Yeah, I think I've been around to many matching colored bikes with deep v rims and powder coated frames lately. I'm hoping that stuff goes out of style soon. When I see a bike thats not a little messed up I always feel like its owner doesn't ride it hard enough.

I definitely don't think this is a terrible hobo bike. Its just that when you ride through a group of too sexy bikes its sort of strange. Whatever happened to the well functioning yet not sexy bike trend?

The bike has a top tube pad because one of the brake cable holders is broken and sharp. I don't have anything to cut it off with. What do people use, start with a hacksaw and finish with sandpaper?

That's exactly what my LBS would do (and indeed did), but you gotta be really careful to protect the frame around it. If the only problem is that it's sharp just make it smooth with a file. A touch of nail polish will finalize your masterpiece.

frankstoneline 01-23-08 02:48 PM

heres my beater.
Its a late 70's frame, basically stock plus a wheelset, though the cranks will be gone soon.

you got a beauty of a bike there man, dont beat yourself up over it if you get to ride it and you dig it.

P.S. the brake fell off mine the other day because the brake bolt I have came loose and fired off mid ride, so I have a handle but no caliper at the moment. :p

I've got some sweet Chupacabras shirts from soccer/softball teams I played on. You should rock one at all times.

I think I may have you beat with my beast.

This picture makes it look much nicer than it is. The chain isn't gold, it's rust and salt.

mathletics 01-23-08 08:51 PM

You guys have some ****ing nice beaters. Where's the rust? Where are the frame dents? Where are the "classic" center pull brakes?

Is "chimo" short for "child molester"?
haha, a couple friends and I always call windowless vans "chimo vans"

ThunderChunky 01-23-08 09:05 PM

Thank god there are no deep V's here. I would punch someone. I dig that there are other people out there who ride there bikes and dont worry too much looks/price etc. Lets see some more beaters.

Dude for real. Is that thing seriously a chimo? I've never heard of those?

evictionsurplus 01-23-08 09:37 PM

The shocking thing about all these bikes is that they all have brakes. Dear lord!

sug 01-23-08 09:42 PM

Speaking of "Where's the rust? Where are the frame dents? Where are the "classic" center pull brakes?"

When I got her.

Now.

Oh she doesn't have dents, though. I love this thread. This is not a bike porn, but not necessarily a jackass thread neither. Ugly, but lovable.

curiousincident 01-23-08 09:48 PM

It might look like it's trying to be flashy, but don't believe it. This bike is a parody more than anything else, usually gets referred to as the 'clown bike'. I assure you it's covered in a mixture of rust, salt and dirt. Hell, one of my toeclips snapped off yesterday cause it was so rusty.

I'm still working on my beater bike. Have a 1970 Raleigh Record that I'm going to convert.

My Beater

shasta 01-23-08 10:23 PM

I see your rust

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...c/CIMG0980.jpg

and raise you 5 backwards long chainring bolts/nuts.

http://i76.photobucket.com/albums/j2...c/CIMG0984.jpg

frankstoneline 01-23-08 11:16 PM

Haha, my whip is currently covered in road grime from riding in the snow. Oh well, she gets the job done. That old cottered crank should be gone in a week or two. I dig all these bikes.

wroomwroomoops 01-24-08 05:41 AM

So far, I like shasta's bike the most, with curiousincident's a close second. Both are actually very nice bicycles, desirable and fun to ride, apparently.

Oh man, too bad I just wiped my bike down after about a week of sloppy weather riding, otherwise I'd have taken a picture. Oh well, I'll give it a couple more days.
